Agreed. I think "cap hell" is a thing of the past although you can be cap constrained which I think Dallas is this year

They have been too quick to reward their own in the past and too quick to extend guys past their prime

Bottom line, you need to nail the draft in this day and age. FA should be a supplement to get you over the top/fill specific roles. You can't build a team through FA

I think one of the Cowboys biggest issues is they don't foster a environment of competition. Too worried about progress blockers. Guess what? You are paying dick to Costa, Arkin and Leary. Bring in competition and if more than one pans out you have depth

i have never worried about the salary cap personally.

As a fan its not an issue to me. I know they understand how to manipulate the contracts and get to where they need to be.

Exactly.

The Redskins prove this year in and year out. And will again even with an 18 mil penalty. You can still field a competitive team with creative accounting.

For the idiotic retort 'oh the redskins have been awful we shouldn't be emulating them', they haven't been awful because they are cap-strapped and have no money to spend, they've been awful because they spend it wrong.

You can always find ways to sign whoever you want whenever you want. That doesn't mean we should hand out idiot contracts to people like Spencer and Doug Free.

We know just as much as you know Dbair. Lets not pretend you spend your off hours reviewing NFL contracts.

Common sense dictates it's not good business to have to push guaranteed money into the future in order to get under the cap. How many times have we been burned by this in the past?

Keep parroting that for the next 10 years. Maybe cap hell will happen.

We're only avoiding "cap hell" THIS YEAR by having to turn non-guaranteed money into guaranteed money.

Am I wrong?

You've been crowing this every year since I can remember.

Since the cap started, we've only had 1 or 2 years I recall where there was a real issue, and the worst of that was after the championship seasons where we simply had just too much talent to keep it all, and had many premium players that we HAD to keep and pay accordingly. I doubt we ever get back to where we were then again.

For the record I was 110% on board the free contract....still have mixed emotions if it is time to get rid of him.

and I am 110% against giving spencer a contract. no mixed emotions.

Everyone was on board with the Free contract, but hindsight we can see it was probably a huge mistake.

How unreasonable I am for championing fiscal responsibility!!!

Newsflash!!!!! Starting the off season 20 million over the cap and having to rely on restructures is an issue.

As expected, TE Jason Witten has reworked his contract to help Cowboys' 2013 salary cap. Witten is among 7-8 players who will restructure.

It's like an autograph signing here at the ranch .. Witten has restructured, now Livings and Bernandeu too

So glad we're giving Livings and Bernadeu more guaranteed money.

Good thing this isn't an issue.

It's not my money. If that's what we have to do that's what we have to do. I don't know what their contracts will look like anyhow.

I don't think the two guards were significantly worse at their position than say, Brandon Carr was at his. I'm willing to be patient there, particularly when you factor in all the injuries we had early, new blocking schemes, so many new pieces along the line, switching tackles, etc. Our oline was TERRIBLE but I think that had to be halfway expected with all that factored in, right?

I know everyone just wants to replace the entire interior (again) and that's gonna magically make us better but I don't think so. I think we need to be looking at most to replace one interior lineman and Doug Free. So I don't mind restructuring these two.

The "salary cap" might be fine, but it's the "salary crap" that concerns me.

There isn't enough cap to address the crap on the OL.

Jerry keeps on throwing spare parts (i.e., "salary crap") at the interior OL. And going cheap hasn't yielded much success.

They probably werent going to cut either this year, so the impact overall is probably nill.

I dont know you can say he has been cheap with it. He paid Leonard Davis, Andre Gurode, Flozelle Adams, Colombo and Kosier quite well when they were here.

Also, Garrett says they intend to add competition to the OL positions, so until we see what that means its kinda premature to complain IMO.

No, because this team isn't good at admitting mistakes and moving on.

Are you onboard with giving two mediocre players more guaranteed money?

Do you know the details of these deals?
