MINNEAPOLIS -- Andre Gurode has made the Pro Bowl in each of the last five years, but he is not guaranteed a spot on the Dallas Cowboys' 53-man roster in 2011.
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said he would have a meeting with Gurode, who did not play Saturday night in Minnesota, and his agent, Kennard McGuire, on Sunday. Gurode declined to answer reporters questions as he left the field after the Cowboys' 23-17 win.
"It's a cap issue," Jones said. "And he's healthy. This is the time to talk about it. He's had good competition there. There's alternatives for us there so we're going to sit down and talk about and see what we might work out. It's not one thing disciplinary."
Gurode is scheduled to make $5.5 million this season and count $7.16 million against the cap. Should he be cut or traded, the Cowboys would save $5.5 million against the cap this year and have a $1.66 million charge in dead money in 2012.
"I will like to keep the details of my conversations private that we had with Jerry and Stephen (Jones)," McGuire said. "There are a few things that both sides are discussing."
Jones would not talk about possible trade discussions regarding Gurode.
Gurode made the trip to Minnesota, but Jones said the decision to sit the veteran was made before the team left Dallas. Gurode missed the first two weeks of training camp after undergoing surgery in June. He played last week against the San Diego Chargers.
The decision also speaks to how well second-year center Phil Costa has performed. Even after Gurode's return Costa continued to take snaps with the first team; however, he suffered a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee Wednesday and is expected to miss two-four weeks.
Jones said he expected Costa to be ready for the Sept. 11 season opener at the New York Jets.
"He got pushed," Jones said of Gurode's status related to Costa's play. "It's not getting pushed. He got pushed, so that's a positive for the team."
If Gurode, 32, is no longer with the Cowboys, then the team will make a 60 percent turnover on the line from 2010. The Cowboys cut Leonard Davis and Marc Colombo before training camp and are counting on rookies Tyron Smith (right tackle) and Bill Nagy (left guard) to start right away.
Jones said there is no consideration in bringing in veteran help should Gurode be cut. Undrafted rookie Kevin Kowalski will start at guard against the Vikings, but the Cowboys have several options that could play out by the opener if Costa is unable to return.
Nagy or Kyle Kosier could play center and Montrae Holland, who has missed most of camp with a back injury, could be inserted at guard. Nagy took snaps at center earlier in camp and Kosier was the backup center on game days on several occasions last year, though he never took a snap.
"Obviously we're still looking at what our options are here," Jones said. "We've got two games to look at them and two or three practices, but it shows these guys are playing well and (Costa) is deserving; Kowalski's deserving of this opportunity. I think this is going to be good for our football team."
