I think they had their battles because Malzahn wanted to throw it more, but if anything he's grown as a coach since then because now he runs it all the time himself. Using the players on your team to their particular strengths and all... That concept that is foreign to us all too often.

But he's from the state so you know Jerry knows him. Was even HC at Lacewell's old gig Arky State. :towel

Seriously though, I'm admiring these top spread-type coaches more and more, especially when they can adapt to run it like Malzahn. And he looks like more of a professor type with the little glasses but I guess he's turned into a heck of a coach.

You're right though, Garrett's gonna stay one way or another. Probably get a three-year extension. :suicide

I actually kind of feel a little bad for Garrett. He was put in a situation where he just can't win. He was underqualified and put in a situation with Jerry where he'll always be handicapped.

At the beginning of the year, I had some hope that if things went sour, Jerry would make meaningful change. I've lost that hope. He's dug in even further and running his mouth more and more.

Meh, old argument, but I don't feel a bit sorry for him. He's had all these prime jobs handed to him based soley on his dad's association with Jerry. He's always had a top QB and lots of other good players. He's made millions of dollars and the media have pretty much kissed his ass the whole time he's been here even as he's botched several game management situations. As big a pain in the ass as Jerry can be, he's not the one screwing up those calls at the ends of games and making us get blown out in elimination games.

I feel a lot more sorry for coaches who don't have a QB and never have a real chance to win.

All fair statements. I guess my point was that the real issue is Jerry and until he decides to change, no coach is going to have much success in Dallas. Would a good coach have more success? Sure, but I don't think there is a coach out there that can cure what ails the Cowboys.

McCarron is the ultimate game manager type of SEC QB.

He's a perfect match for Alabama and Saban, but I don't see him as the dynamic type of QB who can make his mark in the NFL.

For example, he isn't the player that Andy Dalton was/is.

Being a quality game manager SEC QBs usually doesn't translate to a highly successful NFL career.

He wouldn't have the numbers he has if he were just a "game manager"

He's never been asked to do more so it's not really fair to say he can't. The coach I know (I'm important!) who got to work the Manning camp the last two years says McCarron looks the part, can make all of the NFL throws, etc.

Been behind this guy being drafted by us for quite some time now.

Would love to see us nab him in the 2nd round, though I think if he goes to the combine and lights up the throwing drills he'll end up being a first round pick.

one of the scouts said Jonny Football was a top 15 pick -lets hope Jerry is not enamored by the loser

Yeah, hopefully by somebody else then.

I wouldn't touch this guy in the first round with any pick.

Reports: Louis Nix III hires agents

Updated: December 6, 2013, 10:39 PM ET

By Matt Fortuna | ESPN.com

The first tangible sign Louis Nix III would not return to Notre Dame was when he posted a picture Thursday on Instagram of the Golden Dome in his rearview mirror.

The second came Friday, when the Sports Business Journal and the Chicago Tribune reported that the redshirt junior nose guard signed with agents Todd France and Brian Ayrault.

Nix would be ineligible to return to Notre Dame once he hires an agent, a clear sign he's headed to the NFL draft.

The leap to the NFL is not surprising considering Nix, who has missed the Fighting Irish's past two games and is out for their bowl game after undergoing meniscus surgery, is currently No. 4 on Scouts Inc.'s list of draft-eligible players. He is No. 10 on Mel Kiper Jr.'s Big Board, as well.

The 6-foot-3, 347-pound Nix is expected to graduate from Notre Dame this month.

The Jacksonville, Fla., native has been an instrumental force in the middle of the Irish's defense this season, displaying a rare blend of quickness and size that makes him coveted at the next level.

A lot of mocks have him going to us. Would have made a lot more sense when we ran the 3-4 so I fully expect Jerry to make him the pick.
