I agree. I hate using 3 backs. I don't believe for a second this notion that there aren't feature backs anymore. That they can't carry the load like they used to. Bullshat. It doesn't make any sense. Players today are bigger and stronger than they've ever been. Why can't they handle the same workload of the players before them?
A great RB needs to get into a rhythm. So he can read the defenses. Wear them down. Impose his will over the opposition. This 3 back attack prevents that.
To me, you use 3 backs when you don't really have 1. It's a bandaid you get by with until you can upgrade the talent. The objective should always be getting the guy you can build your ground game around.
