Free agency could begin as early as 11:01 a.m. (CT) Saturday, according to a story on Pro Football Talk. If U.S. District Judge David Doty rules that the league has to keep its doors open, then player movement, including trades, could begin. But don't expect the Cowboys to be players.

True, they could use a safety, and there likely are other players out there who would be enticing to the Cowboys. But Dallas already has an NFL-high $137.4 million committed toward the 2011 salary cap. The Cowboys are expected to have to cut players and/or restructure contracts before making any moves.

So don't expect them to rush out and make a splash -- which Jerry Jones is known to do -- by signing a big-name free agent like Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.

On the other hand, they could lose some of their own free agents. Defensive end Marcus Spears, a former first-round pick, is expected to leave in free agency, and safety Gerald Sensabugh is going to test the market.

Nah, we're good. We can always release players. And then you have the no state income tax in Texas.

We're ready to go. Well done, Stephen.

Yup, Jerry has heard from other GMs around the league that we have a good roster, so were good.

If there's a season I wouldn't be surprised to be in last place. We have to address those areas of need or we will sustain another season like last year. I just don't see how we can sign anyone with that kind of cap figure.

Then we have to worry about signing our rookies from the draft. lol

Rookie pools aren't that big, I think it's in the range of 3.5 to 4 mil.

So we could easily clear enough room to sign our rookies.

We'll have plenty of room to sign our draft picks.

But we'll be bringing a knife to a gun fight in veteran free agency.

I doubt you're going to see many teams active in signing free agents until more progress is made towards the CBA.

So you can put away your knife, gun and fork until the appropriate time.

You can continue to come up with lame reasons why things aren't so bad.

One objective look at the situation tells you Dallas is in the worst financial shape of any of the 32 teams in the NFL.

Hence, ya know.....this article from an "overreacting" writer from the Star-Telegram.

Yep.

The media always knows the exact situation.

So what's the exact situation?

The Cowboys aren't cap poor next year?

Let me guess. You have to wait and see. That's an easy way to avoid stating the obvious.

I can't believe this is even a debate.

If you want to look at this as your typical NFL off-season, then so be it.

But something tells me that it's not.

And until it resembles something that is considered more typical I'd resist the urge to base opinions as they are on the circumstances of March 13th, 2011.

But, what's a day without a good anti-Cowboy rant between chums? lol

So....there won't be a cap and free agency?

Why are you avoiding admitting the Cowboys have the worst cap situation in the entire league? Can't handle that dose of honesty? If this was Washington, would you be talking nonsense like this won't be a typical offseason and teams won't be aggressive?

It's all relative, Mikey. Even if teams aren't aggressive, guess which team has to be the most conservative? The one with the most money already committed to 2011. Your Dallas Cowboys.

There the Eagles are.....a better team, better roster and somehow they have a ton of money to work with.

And we're here with an inferior roster, a supposed cap guru and our cap situation resembles something you would expect from a winner like the Steelers or Patriots.

That's not overreacting, negativity or opinion. It's fact.

And where are the facts on how the release of Barber and Columbo (or the Ukrainian "strongman" or Terrance Newman or Leonard Davis) would affect the cap?

They will effect the cap. But it won't effect it enough to level the playing field. And it will also make the team even more needy.

Spin away. The fact remains the Cowboys are in a bad financial situation. And while they scramble to create room to sign players, every other team enters the free agency period with a boatload to spend.

Can't wait for that cap guru to bring that midas touch over to the GM role someday.

You're a homer. Can't handle a real discussion on the reality of this football team.

Chalk it up to fans "overreacting" to something as serious as the league's highest payroll.

I don't mind having the highest payroll when we're the best team. But when we are a punching bag loser and we're still so cap poor, something's wrong. And I'd say that something is the GM and his bastard son.

Yeah, I'm a homer because I would like to see what the situation is once more variables are settled.

Sure.

What are you waiting to see? Regardless if the new cap number gives us 10 million to spend or 30, it'll give other teams more. I don't see the point. There's nothing to wait and see. We have more salary committed to 2011 than every other team in the league. That should depress you.

I'm a truth teller.

95% of the membership on all these boards are nothing more than fanatic homer fans incapable of looking at the team objectively. They come to these boards to be fed a banquet of bullshat about how good everything is presently.

Like Mikey Winicki. Making excuses and hoping the proven fact that the Cowboys have the worst cap situation in the NFL goes away.

Right now we have $94 million base salary committed to 48 players. Spin it how you want, that is bad. I can only see about $20m in cuts (and that is disregarding dead cap space) but we would have to replace those players somehow and we still need to re-sign some key FAs.
