I know people want to say "Oh no one would take him because of his salary"......you could have worked that out before hand. A team trading for Ware has no signing bonus commitments, so re-do the contract as part of the deal.

Convert his $12 million dollar salary this year into say, an $8 million SB over three years, with a $4 million base this year, an $8 million base in year two and $10 million in year three.

Yearly cap hits.....$6.66 million, 10.66 million and 12.66 million. You can cut after two years with a cap hit of $2.66 million.

Guarantee years 1 and 2. You get a 3 year, 30 million contract with $20 million guaranteed which, I think, is what he got with Denver.

Spencer earning exactly 0 of his $10 million last year had to hurt negotiations with Ware.

I honestly think Jerry sold him a false bill of goods with 5 years of $5M-$7M base salaries with a JJ guarantee he'd retire a Cowboy. I don't think it's just coincidence that his first season of base salary that is appropriate for a top level pass rusher just happens to fall in the same year that his bonus money doesn't spread across.

Jerry begged for upfront leeway in return for a wink-antee that he'd make $12M. Now you want him to take less after Spencer just made as much in 2 years as Ware has made in the last 3-4? No that would be the cap hits for the team that traded for him. The cowboys cap hit is the same no matter what

I addressed salary. Teams were willing to pay him obviously. Denver's contract certainly indicates his injuries/performance didn't bother them

If Ware had sat in the market for a month and signed a $2 million deal, you might have a point. He signed in 1 day and got $20 million guaranteed. That isn't worth a draft pick by leveraging teams against each other?
