There is no emotional media ploy.

Do you feel safer today letting your kids go out in the neighborhood on their own?

Do you feel safer stopping at a rest area at night?

Do you feel safer taking a trip to Israel or the Middle East?

As far as the first two, I don't see much difference between now and 20 years ago. I guess, really, the same is true for trips to Israel or the Middle East....I wouldn't have traveled there 20 years ago and have no desire to go there now. They've always been volatile and the Middle East has been, for a long time, a volatile place for Americans to travel.

I do think these crazy lunatics are targeting more public places which makes me leery to frequent them. However, I can't really attribute it to any one issue. Illegal immigrants don't seem to be doing many of these mass attacks. Seems to be mainly crazies (Colorado movie theatre) or guys who have been radicalized (or think they have been radicalized). It isn't like there is this mass of immigrants that are suddenly attacking citizens. It seems to be U.S. citizens who are being corrupted over things like Twitter that are then attacking.

Probably several reasons, including police agencies throughout the country adopting Guiliani's approach which was zero tolerance. Couple that with stiff sentences (that's right, those minimum mandatory sentences had a positive effect on crime) and getting tough on crime and it had a positive impact. It's only a surprise to you and others why crime is on the uptick. The undermining of law enforcement and law and order in general the last 8 years will only lead to a continued increase in crime, especially violent crime.

You seem to be contradicting yourself here. You acknowledge the decline, but then seem to claim crime is on the uptick?

Come on man... you won't even admit the most mundane points. The media focuses more on violent crimes now than they did in 1990, and if you dispute that, then I have no more time for you.

This is a perfect example of the emotional ploy perpetrated on the American people by the media and social media. Statistically speaking it is less likely for you to be a victim of a violent crime than it was in 1990, by a measure of half. We are literally safer than we've been in a quarter century. In fact, the violent crime rate is about the same as it was in 1970. That's the last time the violent crime rate was this low. That's just how it is.

Problem is violent crimes are so magnified now it seems worse than it is... your perspective is skewed. Not that there's anything wrong with that, perspectives are skewed all the time. But these crimes sell in the media, society craves the outrage created by them, and the government grows and curtails more of our rights because of the fear.

If you weren't more fearful in 1991 when violent crime rates were twice as high, then your fear is not grounded in reality.

Here's another link showing violent crime rates back to 1960...

United States Crime Rates 1960 - 2014

I think my perspective has to do with the type of threat that could be looming around the corner in present times. I really don't want to have to worry about some guy firing a weapon or detonating a bomb in a large gathering I may be attending. I'm under no illusions about my chances of this happening to me. I understand that the odds are overwhelmingly in my favor that it won't happen. The fact that it could, that's enough for me.

I would much rather live my life in 1991 conditions than what we have going on right now. I realize being a well off white male probably makes my view pretty self serving in the eyes of people who had to live through high crime in the 90s because of their circumstances.

And you think the media does that just to sensationalize? Like its not really an issue?

Crime was on the decline and for years and now violent crime is up. Where's the contradiction?

Just like a lot of liberal folks, it's never an issue until it affects them in some way. Lets face it. When we talk about crime, the highest crime rates are probably in some minority neighborhoods or mainly confined to certain groups. In our push for the liberal utopia and get softer on crime, release "non-violent" offenders, soften sentencing guidelines, etc. it's going to affect those communities more as they're the ones that will be affected by these decisions.

I don't care to look up the stats but I believe Baltimore, for example, is a much more dangerous city today and I bet that holds true for other larger cities as well. Murders are on the upswing. Aggressive policing is gone and will will continue to decline throughout the country and the minority population will pay for it in the long run. Of course, it won't directly affect me or many folks here probably due to where we live.

The data that pep posted? That shows violent crime isn't increasing?

If you're talking about the link he posted on this page, it only goes up to 2014.

Violent crime rising in US cities, study finds - CNNPolitics.com

Violent crime is on the rise so far this year in major cities across the US compared to the number of homicides, rapes, robberies, assaults and shootings that occurred in the same cities by this point in 2015, a new report has found.

The midyear violent crime survey released Monday by the Major Cities Chiefs Association shows 307 more homicides so far in 2016, according to data from 51 law enforcement agencies from some of the largest US cities.

In addition to a large increase in homicides, major cities in the US have experienced more than 1,000 more robberies, almost 2,000 more aggravated assaults and more than 600 non-fatal shootings in 2016 compared to this time last year. The only category of violent crime not reflecting an increase when compared to last year is rape.

The 316 homicides reported by the Chicago Police Department were by far the most of any law enforcement agency included in the survey, a 48% increase over last year. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said there were 110 homicides so far this year, compared to 85 in 2015. San Jose's 25 homicides more than doubled the amount during the same period last year.

Both major candidates with disapproval ratings at or above 55%. Is that some sort of record?

What a remarkably negative election this has been. 100 more days of this? Damn ....

I just saw that Hillary was at 78% disapproval

And 66% untrustworthy

The sad thing is those same stupid fuck leftist idiots will still vote for her because Trump said something stupid that "hurt their feelings" or "was insensitive"

Because that's more offensive than Hillary and her litany of offenses

What I can't wrap my head around is that even after it was proven that she knowingly and intentionally put our national security at risk that ppl are still planning on voting for her

For me that is a deal breaker! Period!!

Yet the Dems are willing to dismiss it like it didn't even happen. To me it is unthinkable that they aren't even willing to weigh that fact into their overall decision on who to vote for

Media in full blown "we love Hillary" spin now. Some ridiculous poll numbers posted and one that apparently posted some numbers that were unflattering to Hildakunt, so they changed their methodology to make it look better for her.

According to one bogus poll that was released, she went from 6-7 down to 3-4 up almost over night.

Oh and what a shock, after having debates scheduled when no one would watch vs Bernie, a repeat performance is coming for the general election. Two debates go right up against NFL prime time games.

That it matters is sad commentary on our culture and why we have the candidates we have.

Have a better idea and understanding of what you're talking about before you hit the key strokes.

That's more than a little ironic.

I asked another poster to explain how it's not a fact that the violent crime rates have been steadily decreasing for years. You decided to interject yourself into that conversation and started talking about possible reasons why the fact exists... which isn't responsive to my post at all. You literally had no idea or understanding of what we were talking about before you hit the keystrokes. So like I said, read better.

And now you're cherry-picking by citing rates in a few cities instead of the country as a whole, and discounting the crime rates I cited because they "only" go to 2014. The other dude already tried that. It doesn't change the overall stats. 2015 just ended not too long ago, and it takes time for the FBI to compile and analyze the numbers from all over the country. I'll wait for the FBI numbers to see if my point needs adjusting or not... I'm not impressed by some lobbying arm of law enforcement saying a few cities have seen an uptick.
