All things considered you'd rather have both.
But when you look at our options this season that wasn't possible. So replacing 4 of the 5 starters just for the sake of it would have been dumb. It was impossible to vastly upgrade the talent at all those spots. Maybe we do replace a guard and Costa is our center. Or Leary steps up. idk. I think we played it as best we could tho.
I think with Shanahan's track record we can assume they'd have a solid run game regardless.

Because you can't make the investment in OL that we made last season (scheme-wise, scouting-wise, money-wise) and just throw it away after one year. Our results for what we did (new starter at every position on our line + all the injury) were extremely predictable. I'd say we made upgrades everywhere except for RT but with that sort of upheaval you're just not going to be successful.
Blowing it up again in an impatient snap-judgement would have been technically possible I guess but very stupid. Especially when we did actually see improvement late when they all started playing together regularly.
We're not talking about rebuilding a quality unit. Like, OMG, can't replace those pieces because they could suck.
Piece we have, they suck. They need to be replaced.
It's absolute foolishness (a) giving Livings and Berny the contract we did and then (b) being afraid to admit the mistake after one year and making a change.
Basically your strategy for fixing the line is "hope."

Our Oline transformation was going to be tough. We replaced every position on the goddam line. On top of that, we dealt with serious injuries there for half the year.
Why is everyone surprised that the unit struggled? For a unit where health, cohesion, communication and familiarity are more important than maybe anywhere else on the field if you get an entirely new unit then rotate players in and out of the hospital ward things aren't gonna be great no duh.
So instead of advocating that we go out and do the same fucking shit this year (and probably see the exact same results) I'm saying I think it's good that we upgraded where we could, and it's also good that we'll have some continuity along the line - hopefully returning at least three starters in their positions from last season. Maybe we make a move at RT, or someone like Leary steps up in camp and sits Livings down, and we see even more progress. Let's trust the vision of the coaching staff for at least one more year and see if they made it work? If not, this will be their last year here anyhow.

Thats exactly it.
We gave those guys contracts that NOBODY in the league would have given them. The Bengals didn't retain Livings when they had plenty of cap room to do so. The Panthers didn't retain Berny after having one of the worst oline's in the league to which he was a backup to.
