Damn, lotta Spencer haters in here. It all depends on the money - being 30 might make him less attractive to other teams too and knock his price tag down.

But I think all the article is really saying is that we aren't going to franchise him again. If we keep him, it needs to be on a longer term deal to lower his cap hit.

oh good we've got the david now where noone can question any decisions the FO/coaching staff make.

You can question them all you want, just saying I feel pretty good about the tarck records of Marinelli and Kiffin with DL's and what kind of players they want to fit their scheme. If they think Spencer's a good fit, why create another hole if they can work out a deal to keep him?

Because hanging on to erratic players who we've drafted and giving them contracts for playing well for a season or a season and a half is part of the reason we're in the cap mess we're already in. And we have players who actually deserve long term deals coming down the pipes.

Everyone wanted to keep Laurent Robinson, too. I'm sure Texans fans wanted to keep Mario. Sometimes you just have to let flash in the pans walk, and it generally works out well for you. Letting Robinson walk was a great decision. I wish we'd continue to show that kind of restraint.

I'd rather that money go to the OL.

Oh well, another year of watching Romo run around and the offense suck will be fun.

I really hope the team is just chumming the waters for a trade.

Get the idea out there with free agency not too far away and hopefully set up a tag and trade so Spencer is off the books as soon as possible.

Where's Joe Pesci when you need him?

Spencer's franchise number will be insane right? It has to be 120% of the tag since we'd be doing it two years in a row?

How's it a mistake?

If Marinelli and Kiffin are looking at his tape and saying "we need this guy out there" and "he fits what we want to do" then its the right move.

I wouldnt break the bank to do it, but if they firmly believe he can play the LDE spot and be productive, then they should definitely re-sign him. otherwise its just another hole that has to be filled either via free agency, draft or from within.

By that same token, shouldn't we be able to trust Monte and Rod to find his replacement on a rookie deal?

If we were still running the 3-4, I could almost understand the logic and/or need to re-sign Spencer. I'd still be against it, but it would make more sense. We're running a 4-3. We do not need Spencer.

I was feeling a little bit better about the offseason, right up until I read this crap. What is the length of the contract? Once again, we'll have a Doug Free situation. It's doubtful that he'll play the entire contract through, then you will have to cut him.

There is a reason why you didn't re-sign him long term after his rookie contract expired.

The wrong Jerry died today: Jerry Buss. And we're stuck with this fucker!

And dbair, you can't tell me that we should trust their judgment. They haven't even worked with the guy in drills yet. This is an FO move all the way.

Which is more of a sure thing, a guy who they have NFL tape on that just had a good year or a rookie?

Even Bill Polian said Spencer was a better fit at 4-3 DE than OLB, and he doesnt work here at all.

So no, it isnt just a FO move.

I'm not looking at the sure thing, just the prudent thing to do. We are closer to being in rebuilding mode than caring about Spencer being able to help our championship aspirations. Which again are pretty nil right now.

What does that have to do with anything?

And what Bill Polian says doesn't hold much weight either. He just watches tape. The same type of tape that led Wade Phillips to initially believe that Bradie James wasn't very good. Now he has him on his 2nd roster.

So, yes. The decision to re-sign Spencer is an FO decision, rarely based on Monte, Rod, or Bill Polian's Scouting expertise.

So basically you think you know more than Kiffin, Marinelli and Polian.

This teams window is closing..and it's closing fast...

I don't think this team has much of a chance with or without spencer..but we sure as fuck don't have a shot without him...

Bad long term move, but fuck it, roll the dice and take a shot.

Y'all fuckers know it's game over once Romo is gone...it'll be 10 more years before we find a QB.

Which is why we should take this money and use it over the next two years to build a line and a running game.

Build the kind of line other qb's have been given. Romo has been running for his life in every season but 07.

Draft a back and sign a veteran. Figure out the fb position. Figure out right tackle. Draft at least two o-lineman.

Make this offseason about building a running game.

We can platoon that spot with what we have and through the draft or a mid level guy this year.

Once he takes those cap numbers it's going to be a big problem.

No. I'm certainly not going to delude myself into thinking that real pros are making these decisions and/or that it is the end all, be all, believe, let's suck Jerry Jone's balls.
