Bobcats owner and NBA legend Michael Jordan says in a new book that he considered himself a racist as a younger man ' against all white people.'
Michael Jordan was one of the first NBA owners to condemn Donald Sterling last week after tapes of the Clippers owner making racist comments came to light, but in a book released Tuesday titled "Michael Jordan: The Life," his Airness says he was a “racist against all white people” when he was a teenager.
According to
www.news.com.au, Jordan, in the book written by Roland Lazenby, says he remembers being called the n-word by a girl in school in 1977.
“So I threw a soda at her,” he says. “I was really rebelling. I considered myself a racist at the time. Basically, I was against all white people.”
He says his mother convinced him he could not go through life consumed by racial hatred.
I was really rebelling. I considered myself a racist at the time. Basically, I was against all white people.
After the Sterling news broke, Jordan, who owns the Charlotte Bobcats, was quick to condemn the longtime owner of the Clippers.
“I look at this from two perspectives — as a current owner and a former player. As an owner, I’m obviously disgusted that a fellow team owner could hold such sickening and offensive views,” Jordan said about Sterling. “As a former player, I’m completely outraged. There is no room in the NBA — or anywhere else — for the kind of racism and hatred that Mr. Sterling allegedly expressed.
“I am appalled that this type of ignorance still exists within our country and at the highest levels of our sport. In a league where the majority of players are African American, we cannot and must not tolerate discrimination at any level,” he said
