JEAN-JACQUES TAYLOR / The Dallas Morning News

Miles Austin signed a fat new deal in the off-season that paid him about $17 million this season in bonus and salary.

Though he's being paid like an elite receiver, he isn't playing like one.

Yes, he scored a nifty 37-yard touchdown and surpassed the 100-yard mark against Arizona last week, ending a seven-game streak without one, but he didn't play that well. He caught only six of the 13 passes directed toward him, dropping one in the end zone and slipping on a route that led to an interception return for a touchdown.

The Cowboys need him to play better.

We can blame some of his struggles on Tony Romo's injury and Austin's inability to find a consistent rhythm with Jon Kitna. But the bottom line is he's dropped too many passes and had too many concentration lapses this season.

It's not fair, but more is expected of players who earn the most money, especially in the salary-cap era. The Cowboys expect Austin to be one of their best players. He doesn't get to fade into the shadows.

The Cowboys need him to be a player worthy of the spotlight. Thus far, that hasn't happened.

I really don't care right now. Austin will come back ready to work next season and that is what really matters.

Jerry couldn't wait to over pay him. I bet Miles, Barber and Newman all cash their checks at the same place. Then they laugh about it over a bottle of thunder bird and a jar of pickled pig feet.

Yeah, but unlike Newman, he isn't approaching an age wall, and unlike Barber, doesn't get by on marginal talent. He was a good sign.

I didn't love any of the 3 contracts. Jerry isn't the only GM that has done those kind of contracts, Jacksonville did the same with Garrard.

There's nothing wrong with asking a one year wonder to do it again befor giving him a big pay day. I like Austin, Bryant is going to be good for him next year, but he's not what he was last year, IMO. I think he's as good as it gets as a #2, and a pretty good #1, but not great by any means.

Yeah, Bob, you're right, the other two contracts were worse. Especially the Newman deal.

Nothing is ever a sure thing, pretty much every deal you give out has some risk. The big part of signing someone is like with every decision in life, you weigh the pros and the cons, and Miles' pros tipped the scales. It's another story when it came to signing Newman and Barber, as I already explained.

I don't need to weigh the pros and cons. Resigning Austin when they did was the wrong thing to do. They didn't have to do it when they did. They wasted another year of evaluation.

So now you're stuck paying top #1 WR money for guy who isn't that good.

These things happen when your personnel is run by an oil salesman.

Why was it wrong? Did Austin not in fact have a great season last year? You pay players according to production and pros versus the cons. Quit being a child of hindsight.

You don't even know what you're talking about. I hated the signing when it was made. I preached against it weeks before it was made. No hindsight needed here. I'm almost always right.

You pay players according to their projected production for the life of the new contract. And you could make a much more accurate guess to that production by making a one year wonder back it up another year rather than overreacting to his only productive season of his career and signing him like he's Andre Johnson.

Horrible move made by the worst GM in all of football.

You being "almost always right" has nothing to do with any nonexistent skills that you believe you possess, it's just a byproduct of a terrible Jerry Jones sticking his hands too much into the Cowboys. So stop taking credit for an eventuality. Fact is there was no downside to re-signing Austin. He's big, he's fast, he works hard, he's unselfish and a good player to have in the lockerroom. Now unless you can produce some irrefutable facts that you claimed why Austin would have a down 2010, other than the fact that he was being paid after a part-time year, then I would be glad to see them.

I don't need to present anything to you. Someone who was obviously wrong on this issue.

I just know it doesn't ever make sense to pay a guy off of only one year when you have him signed for another. Only a dipshat would make that decision. You are taking a risk you don't have to take. Nothing good can come from it.

It takes a shrewd GM to extend contracts early. We don't have that. Which is why we have such bad ones on our payroll. Newman, Barber, Roy and Austin. All terrible contracts for players who won't provide the bang for those bucks.

As I suspected, you just throw shit against the wall because Jerry's got your panties in a bunch.

Yeah, that's it. It was a lucky guess. I didn't know that that's just a bad way to do business.

Whatever it was, it was better than being you. Wrong on the issue.

I mean, this moron's talking like he knows something. "Well, you got to weigh the pros and cons when you make these decisions."

F your pros and cons. The decision didn't need to be made for another year, you moron.

At least I think things through rather than just making my decisions going by emotions...like a girl.

I think things through too. Which is why I'm almost always right on these things. My track record speaks for itself.

What I don't do is allow team loyalty to effect what I think. Making me a far superior read than anything you'd ever have to type.

Yeah, he's a part-time player so he doesn't deserve an extension is really looking deep into the subject...
