Well if you think about it, its not just the Spencer situation.

Its the NT situation. They know Brent is gone and its being said Ratliff is almost assuredly gone. They really have to fill this spot as a priority if they were going to stay with a 3-4.

You know what I could see Jerry doing? We switch to the 4-3, and then he goes out and drafts a player like John Jenkins from Georgia to play DT.

Much smarter idea to develop a young guy than pay $11 million for a meh player.

He's not meh, he's just hitting the market at a horrible time for us . About to turn 29, just had his best year, and we are totally capped out.

You can
A. Pay him and have no other free agents
B. get a pick, replace him. And still have money for some free agents

(Buffalo can't tag Byrd and Levitre)

Unless hoof was wrong and we can't get a pick for him but I doubt that hoof is pretty plugged in

You think he'll be a 10+ sack guy after getting paid? Fuck no.

He gave minimal effort annually right up until he got hit with the franchise tag. He'll regress immediately. I'd rather get a young and hungry guy who wants to earn a roster spot.

That's what I just said.

He's 29 and finally had a breakout year. I'd rather have the pick. Cheaper labor. Get the young guy AND a free agent like Levitre(pro-bowl center, guard, or rt)

Our track record on big re-signings is poor

I don't know why they couldn't if theres a partner who is willing. I gotta believe a guy coming of his type of year with some tread on the tires would have some interest. I don't know of any rule that is in place that would prevent a tag-and-trade scenario but then again I don't have all the answers.

Tag-and-trade is really the only way to make the bad situation with Spencer that they created any better.

Dallas is not in a position to sign a guy like him longterm because I think he's far too risky even after a great year. How many players muster a great year and then fall off the map? Dallas' cap situation is pretty much horrid. If you look at Spotrac, Dallas has the worst cap figure in the NFL right now.

http://www.spotrac.com/cap-tracker/nfl/2013/

That says 13M over. The new CBA allows teams to carry unused cap space from the previous season into the next year.......I guess. Not sure how that works when a team like the Bengals is listed as having 65M in cap space. So will they have like 100M or some shit because there's no way their cap hits go up that much from what they are now?

What I do know is that Dallas has significant increases to base salaries for Romo, Ratliff, Carr, Witten, Miles, Free, and others.

The total looks to be huge but most of it is tied up in Romo and Carr. Much of this can be renegotiated, and likely will as always because that's how Dallas operates, so much of it will come off. Carr can knock off like 11-12M of the number by himself and extending Romo would lower his number, who knows to where really though.

Even if Dallas gets to roll over a lot, they still have a lot of increases coming up.

Furthermore, they have guys like Dez, Tyron, Murray, Lee, Carter who all have contracts expiring in the next couple of years. I think Lee has 1 year left and the rest have 2 seasons left. IMO, that looks to be 5 hefty contracts that will be hitting the books in the next few years.

Can Dallas find a trade partner, who knows. Can they afford to move money around and perpetuate the annual shuffle, yes. Should they do so for Spencer? No.

The reality is the team isn't all that close to be locking up the contract it would take. It's probably gonna be at least 50M. Could be 60M for some desperate team. 60M in contracts would have bought you Ben Grubbs and Chris Myers last offseason. That's a top quality OG and a top quality C. Both guys came out 7th best at their position.

Dallas needs to quit trying to get over the hump because they aren't really that close. 1 win better than the Panthers and 1 win better than the Dolphins and Rams.

Don't waste resources on a single position until you are a single position away. They need multiple.

I thought what the Cowboys gained as a GROUP 2nd half of 2012 worth another healthy look. Out the window now. Could fire em all now. #dfwsp

It reminds me of the Doug free situation. He sat for years and we finally played him before his contract year. We got no production out of him and had to compete with other teams for his services and pay full price. the league isn't set up that way, you can't afford to sign UFA to fill all your holes.

We need more picks, we need to hit on those picks. We have 10 keepers and a bunch of journeymen. We need more guys constantly being churned and groomed snd ready to play on a rookie contract. Because Bending over backwards to re-sign guys who haven't helped us accomplish anything has hurt us far too often. And in this case the player has admitted to giving less than stellar effort.

The zoner "every player is my hero and I wear cowboys pajamas" mentality says "what if the draft pick is bobby carpenter! Huh?". Well then our FO fucked up and they should be held accountable.

I believe freakanomics theorized the best bang for your buck in the nfl was good 2nd and 3rd round picks.

So Mosley is now saying Jerry and Stephen have been in a restaurant sitting there for several hours clearing there heads.

No idea if that is Matt being a dumbass or what. Probably nothing but why post that? Besides the crowd he plays to.

Or they are just eating dinner?

It would be a story if there was some outsider 3rd person there.

Chicago loss got rob fired?

This has to be the first time in NFL history that a QB's shitty game got a DC fired. Al Davis is somewhere lighting up a cigar to that one.

Love it.

I guess the offense did show poor form tackling during those two pick 6 plays. Fireable offenses.

We are so fucked as a fanbase. Al Davis lived to like 82 and medical technology just keeps improving.
