Did anyone see the Titans-Panthers game? Replay is on now and I've only seen one drive, but Cassel looks perfectly competent. He moved the team right down the field and they got a FG after Justin Hunter didn't catch a sideline pass right in his hands. It was the opening drive of the second half, so the total scrubs weren't in yet.

I'm no Cassel fan, but just pointing out that either 1) our coaching and use of him was that bad or 2) preseason defenses are that soft and vanilla, so keep that in mind when anointing Dak.

Or of course it could be and probably is both.

I know a lot of old time Boys fans have nightmares of DAA (the DROUGHT AFTER AIKMAN) and have a terrible fear of the same thing happening again after Romo. Some of that still makes me shudder today (Hutch, Q, Henson, etc) trying to resuscitate Leaf. And so on.

So I can understand while some jump at the chance that Dak is lightning in a bottle.

We were so INCREDIBLY lucky with Romo; truly a lottery win.

But what are the odds of winning a second lottery?

So far the kid has looked real good and shown a lot of intangibles that matter.

BUT:

He has not faced a complicated D or serious blitzes; has not had to react to being under pressure consistently.

The ability to beat the blitz and read a D in half a second and then make the CORRECT choice is so very rare. Bluntly speaking you can say that confidently of less than 10 QBs in the NFL today. Out of how many? How many try each year?

So guys get a grip. Hope and be encouraged but do not as BP said years ago get out the anointing oil just yet.

That's fair to say, but the same applies to all the other rookie QB's too. Its not just Prescott facing preseason defenses. All the others are as well, and right now he looks better than them. Doesn't mean it will pan out that way 2-3-4 yrs down the road, but right now he does look better than those other guys in just about every way conceivable.

Honestly the stats are wonderful, but I'm more impressed with how he looks throwing the football. His mechanics, accuracy, his footwork, hitting receivers on the move rather than making them stop or reach behind them, not being inclined to pull down and run at the first sign of trouble, coming off his first read etc etc. Its impressive right now, especially considering the type of offense he came out of and where he was drafted.

Within the past week, someone here predicted that the old "anointing oil" comment would make a reappearance, this time in reference to Dak.

Who called it? Good job!

edit: It was bb. Well done, bb.

Didn't Hollywood Henderson win the lotto twice? Just saying, it's rare but it does happen.

Petty I read played pretty well for them the other night and could potentially end up winning the backup job over Geno

The thing that strikes me about Dak is how calm and composed he appears to be vs a guy like Weeden who looks scared to death to me in interviews and when he got on the field. If his work effort is as strong as being reported and he hitches his wagon to a willing Romo, then the odds of him panning out should go up dramatically

Kudos to Cowboys QBs coach Wade Wilson. He pushed hard for Dak.

12:12 AM - 20 Aug 2016

I think this may be the first time I've ever heard anything reported about what Wade Wilson actually does for the Cowboys

If he turns out to be correct, then he will have earned every penny imo

Someone posted about Weeden and Cassel last year that Garrett may have freaked them out. Chances are Garrett and Linehan just handed them plays that were never really used in pure form because Romo would tweak at the line. Linehan even said going into the 2015 season that he doesn't give Romo a play to follow but gives him suggestions. Frankly if you think about that, there is a strong chance that an un-Romo play is a play that will fail without his eyes and instincts. I think Jason saw how ill-equipped his offense actually was without Romo and didnt know what to do. If Romo wasn't really following his plays, then what was Weeden and Cassel supposed to do? Interesting that Kellen Moore knows Linehans plays very well and maybe that is what gave Moore a better roster spot: maybe he could run the Linehan offense whereas nobody but Romo could manage the Garrett offense.

Now this still fits my hunch that Garrett, Wilson and Linehan spent the offseason crafting something or maybe "installing" the Linehan offense (which actually exists outside of Romo). Linehan said early on that he was calling Jason's plays not his own. He was allowed to tweak Jason's plays but they were Jason's. Now I wonder if Linehan has his playbook for Dak because it seems like the patterns are more varied and have more lateral movement. Lateral movement is a QBs friend with pressure or blitz coming.

My hunch is that despite what the front office says, Garrett works hard, they're happy with em, and all the poltically correct tripe they spew, he and and his staff are out on their ass if they dont make some kind of playoff run. The whole 1-11 and record without Romo had to have opened a few eyes. Even Jerry made a comment to that effect last year about how he couldnt believe they were only able to win one game without Romo.

Don't fall for the propaganda. This is pure bullshit made public because Jerry knows how most of us think about Wade Wilson. He's also aware of the utter failure of Wilson to do anything but take Jerry's money, but since he is one of Jerry's puppets it's money well spent to him. I doubt Wade Wilson even knew who Prescott was before the Cowboys drafted him.

Yup. Jerry and his "we'll be okay if we coach Em up" and then later "it didn't go they way we expected".

gawd its so disgusting if garrett and his "offense" is so inept. I've never dived deeply into how offenses work to understand enough to say one way or another.

Garrett strikes me as extremely conservative and rigid and I am completely speculating here, but I got the impression that Garrett was in Cassels/Weedens ears constantly telling them what to do or not do and to not screw up to the point where it created paralysis.

I remember when I first started driving, my parents were so up my ass while I was driving, I couldn't concentrate at all. They made me so nervous I was running stop signs and doing all kinds of stupid shit until one day I lost it and yelled at them to get off my fucking back and let me drive. To their credit, they did and didn't get mad at my cussing tirade either. We never had another problem. I wish I could find the video I saw of Weeden being interviewed last year, he looked so damn tense and scared. Maybe he's always like that but it struck me that he looked shell shocked and the season hadn't even started yet.

I still cant get over how good Dak looked and why the "braintrust" couldn't devise a scheme to give either of last years back up QBs some victories. IIRC, Dak also spread the ball out to 5 different receivers in each game. It doesn't even seem like Romo does that.

god damn it, I forgot who I was dealing with, I cant get excited about anything anymore

Who was the source for claiming Wilson wanted him anyway?
