If NFL players played in the UFL and all the UFL players came and played for NFL teams.. we would most certainly not care as much about the NFL and alot more people would watch the UFL.

The NFL's popularity would dip, the UFL's would rise. But the NFL would still dominate all sports leagues in terms of ratings and the UFL would fold within a few years.

If Portland gets a franchise and I can take my family for a fair price I will be caring about the Tornadoes and will follow the NFL with the current disinterest I give the MLB

And you'd be in the vast minority.

I love how we're all Dallas Cowboys fans and most of us have no connection to Texas whatsoever but suddenly rooting interest is tied to location.

NFL fans are fans of teams, not players per se.

In the NBA, fans are fans of players.

But not in the NFL.

These teams, and their histories, are engrained in their fan base. Familes have generations of fans following a team. The NFL has so many events that have become a part of the American culture - Thanksiving day football, Monday Night football, etc.

I don't care if Tony Romo went o go play for some random UFL or other team, and the Cowboys had to resort to playing Eric Ainge at QB. I'd still be tuned in to the Cowboys on Sundays.

You guys way under estimate the value of the "NFL" brand.

The NFL brand is one thing, but individual teams are no where near as powerful. When Brady and Manning are gone those teams will suffer. LeBron leaving Cleveland cost that team loads of money. I know the NBA is slightly different but it proves a point that fans want to see big name talent, not scrubs

Think of the most loyan fan bases in the NFL: Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Washington, Dallas, Minnesota, etc etc etc.

Do you think fans of those teams would lose interest just because the team had to resort to signing no names?

Hell no.

The Cowboys are unique to this. Oakland, Detroit, Jacksonville and Buffalo would not survive like Dallas can.

No NBA comparison flies.

The NBA markets its individual players like no other league. The NBA revolves around 10-15 premier players.

The NFL markets teams, rivalries, and players to a far lesser extent.

Sure it does. Fans in any sport care about big names and winning. There are diehards like you mention that follow no matter what but most fans today are not diehards.

Whatever group of players that play in the NFL will become big names.

The NFL is a star maker.

I'd say that at no point in their history has the NFL had a more diehard fan base than they do now.

And just about every one of them to a man roots for a team first and foremost.

The question isn't if people root for a team FIRST.. its if the NFL didn't have the top athletes and best football players of any league in the world.. would fans continue watching, or would they go and watch the league that does have the top action.

Fans don't want to pay so much of their hard earned money to see mediocrity. You bring in NFL Europe players or UFL players to populate NFL teams and there simply won't be as much interest long term. Sure you may stick with your favorite team for a few seasons, but lets not act like everything doesn't really revolve around you wanting to see the biggest, strongest, fastest, most talented football players there are to offer. Its the reason the draft is such a huge event. Fans all across the world spend so much time with mock drafts, draft reviews and previews, etc.. everybody wants their favorite guys to go to their team. The best players. Same with the offseason. You want the best FA's, fans love the offseason in the NFL beacuse they get a chance to salivate over what potential new additions of players they can get for their football team.

Bottom line.. again.. if you bring in mediocre players to populate the NFL, the brand will lose value, and owners will lose money. If the NFL brought in slower, smaller, less athletic players.. we would definintely see (and could easily notice) a drastic regression or decline in the action every Sunday. The game just wouldn't have the same intensity and entertainment value if it wasn't played by the fastest, biggest, strongest, and most athletic.

Fans arn't going to shell out all that we do for game tickets, tv purchases, merchandise, etc.. for mediocrity.

Hell no.

Are you talking about scabs being used again?

If so, the answer is yes. They tried it once and it was a miserable failure.

Not if its a garbage product they wont.

I'm a fan of the team first and foremost and will pull for them regardless of whether they are 1-15 or 13-3. That said as a whole the league will suffer if every team resorts to placing scabs, semi pro guys, arena leaguers etc etc out there instead of quality talent. The product will get worse, and ratings will fall. Attendence will collapse.

Do you guys watch the playoffs even if the Cowboys arent in it?

Thats the product.

I do, but dont care if I miss some plays, a half or even a game. I dont Tivo anybody else's games, whereas I will Tivo Cowboy games.

If the Cowboys didnt exist tomorrow, I'd probably still watch some games but not to the extent or with the interest I have today.

Terrell Owens is a perfect example of this.

Everyone hated him because what he did to us while with the 9ers. Then he comes here... Shit changes. Everyone loves him. Why? Because he's a Cowboy.

He leaves. We all criticize him again. Why? Because he's not a Cowboy anymore.

We're all fans of the teams and the NFL. The appreciation for the players is a product of that.
