I pretty much ignore anything anyone says about a QB if they first talk about arm strength or size. What is really important about a QB FIRST is what is between the ears. EVERYTHING ELSE is second at best.

Great, then I guess Kellen Moore is your man.

No kidding. Garrett was light years ahead of Troy as far as smarts. Is it important? Yes smarts and intelligence is very important but it doesn't mean squat if you're a 5'10" midget with a noodle arm.

Why? Because he went to Princeton? And why is he consistently out-coached by rivals who never went to the Ivy league? Is there a Cowboy fan alive who wouldn't take Jimmy, who matriculated at poor old Arkanasas, over Red?

That's exactly my point. Just because you're the smartest guy in the room doesn't mean you're the right man for the job. Troy may not have been as smart as Garrett but he had the guts, leadership ability, and it didn't hurt that he was 6'4" with a cannon arm. The point is that measurable a count as much if not more than smarts.

Let's not get smarts confused with good football IQ. They can be massively different things.

Thank you, I almost went after that myself but left it alone.

Who said Troy wasn't as football smart as Red?

Bill Parcells - Wichita State
Jimmy Johnson - Arkansas
Bill Walsh - San Jose State

People like the idea of Garrett. The actual results are pitiful.

Very true. In addition to Football IQ you also have to have measurables.

Garrett strikes me as book smart. That's why he's an OK process guy. He tries to follow some coaching blue print

That's why he blames everything on execution. No creativity in game planning. No feel for the game.

And over five years into it, many people are still getting fooled by the superficials.

I agree 100%.

There is another guy in the staff that I can't figure out for the life of me why he still has a job. Wade Wilson. You guys are right when you talk about the failure of the backup QB's that have been here. Isn't Wade Wilson the QB Coach? Isn't that his job to develop these guys? He deserves more blame than he's getting in my opinion.

Which is kinda the point I was trying to make. Garrett may be book smart, but he is a moron when it comes to football smarts.

you haven't proven that at all

If you're looking for some type of tangible proof it isn't going to happen. The only thing we have to go by is what people say about Garrett. People like Jimmy and Troy, and the Mara family in NY, hell Ive even heard Belichick say that he's the smartest guy they know. That when he walks into a room he's clearly the smartest guy in the room. And last I checked yes you do have to be pretty freakin smart to get into an Ivy League school. From my understanding the academic requirements are a lot higher to get into Princeton than they are at Oklahoma or UCLA.

But again as I stated, that doesn't mean crap when it comes to being a great coach or great player. Troy was better than Garrett because of his measurables.

If you can tell me exactly what type of tangible proof you know of to judge how smart a person is ill see what I can do about finding it. Other than a degree from an Ivy League school since you're suggesting that means squat.

athletes are held to a lower standard compared to the general student population. was he genuinely smart or just "smart for an athlete"? and no honest person who has met Red and Belichick (a modern day genius and innovator) would come away with the impression that Red was sharper. that's just Jimmy and Troy being kind to their old buddy.

it's of no solace to me that Red was better than Troy at algebra and biology 30 years ago, because none of it has translated to winning football games.
