If that happens, then a very good Dlineman or OT drops to us.

I sincerly doubt both are gone though.

Scout’s Notebook: An Early Look At Draft’s Best O-Linemen

Posted 16 hours ago

Bryan Broaddus
Football Analyst/Scout

INDIANAPOLIS – We’ve arrived at the scouting combine here in Indy at Lucas Oil Stadium. Straight from the plane to the dome, it’s time to get to work.

Here are a few things I added to my Scout’s Notebook from Day 1:

•First interview of the day that I was able to sit in on with North Carolina guard Jonathan Cooper (OL13). Have to say that physically he looks taller on tape than he did in person. Measured 6-2, 311 this morning which is the same height as Chance Warmack (OL52) of Alabama but six pounds lighter. It will be interesting to see how well Cooper moves with the extra weight because he played in the 290 range in college. You get the sense listening to him talk that he wants to prove to scouts that he can play stronger than what he might have shown on film. His bench press goal at 225 for the combine is 35 reps and if he is able to hit that number it should put any of those questions from scouts to bed.

•In a nice twist of fate and last names, Kentucky’s Larry Warford (OL51) and Alabama’s Chance Warmack (OL52) are working out back to back during the drills. This will be a great opportunity for scouts to get a comparison of how each of these guards measure up. Warford is a pound down from the Senior Bowl weighing in at 332 pounds which is a good thing. I have seen this work before when you have a player like Warmack who many think is the top guard on the board bring the best out of Warford who wants to prove to scouts that he needs to be in the discussion with him and Cooper. I promise that the Lucas Oil Stadium will be buzzing when Group 2 hits the field as these two battle it out.

•Keep an eye on Oregon guard Kyle Long (OL35) the son of Howie and brother of Chris of the Rams. I had the chance to study him some before I left for the Combine and I came away very impressed. Should do very well in all the drills which is something that you see on tape. Long measure 6-6, 313, and his arm length was 33 3/8’’ but on tape you do see him extend on rushers to keep him off his body. Played as a left guard for the Ducks but with his movement skills believe he could also see some time at tackle. Swing players are going to be valuable in this draft and I believe that he has that type of skill.

•Want to follow a player that you might not know much about but very well could on the second day of the draft? Tackle Terron Armstead (OL03) from Arkansas Pine-Bluff is your guy. Measuring at 6-5, 306 doesn’t play like a small-school player. Was the starter at left tackle and plays the majority of his plays out of a two-point stance. Moves easy and with his 34” arms can hold off rushers easily. When he is on the move he does a really nice job of seeking his target and making contact and sticking with his man. Will be interesting to see if the bright lights of the Combine are too much for him to handle, I am betting, it won’t be.

•The Combine brings in three quarterbacks that I like to call “Bullpen Guys” to throw for all the drills. Not only will these guys throw with their groups when the quarterbacks go, but get the extra work in front of the scouts with the other position drills. Make a note that Tyler Bray (QB2) is one of these bullpen guys and the reason I bring this up is because when Tony Romo was part of the Combine in 2003, he was a bullpen guy and we were able to see him make throw after throw to evaluate. Bray is a guy that scouts are looking at potentially in the middle rounds of the draft.

NFL combine 2013: Vols' Bray surprises with weight gain, demeanor

By Rob Rang | The Sports Xchange/CBSSports.com
February 21, 2013 4:17 pm ET

INDIANAPOLIS -- Many prospects, including Alabama right tackle D.J. Fluker, lost weight preparing for the NFL Scouting Combine.

Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray found some, adding a stunning 24 pounds to measure in at 6-foot-6, 232 pounds in front of scouts on Thursday at the combine.

Bray was wearing the same loose-fitting NFL-issued apparel as the other prospects who have filtered in through the media room at Lucas Oil Stadium, but the weight looked evenly distributed. He plans to participate in the drills, including throwing, in Indianapolis.

While Bray physically looked the part, he was noticeably nervous at the podium. He looked interviewers in the eye when answering questions but was surprisingly soft-spoken and short with many of his answers.

While Bray's nerves certainly don't mean he won't be successful as an NFL quarterback, he lacked the field-general persona that some scouts expect at the position. This is surprising considering the aggression with which he has played throughout his career with the Volunteers.

To put it simply, Bray possesses as much arm talent as any quarterback in this draft class. His combination of arm strength, accuracy and willingness to throw through tight windows against quality competition has drawn comparisons to fellow former SEC standouts Jay Cutler (Vanderbilt) and Ryan Mallett (Arkansas). Bray attempts -- and often makes -- throws that no other quarterback in this draft class (and few in the NFL) will try.

Due to a lack of mobility and a number of acts off the field that have led to questions about his maturity, Bray ranks as NFLDraftScout.com's No. 7 passer in this draft. But as Dane Brugler pointed out here, he has the tools to leap up the board this week.

Having operated in pro-style attacks under Lane Kiffin and Derek Dooley, Bray completed 58.5 percent of his passes for 7,444 yards and 69 touchdowns against 28 interceptions.

Nice. I hope we find a way to draft Bray. Hopefully he makes it to the later rounds.

I really think he'll end up being a 2nd or 3rd rd pick.

He's going to really stand out in all the throwing drills and has arm strength that probably no other QB in this class has.

We're not drafting a QB this year.

Maybe, although I wouldnt totally rule it out. Especially if they somehow acquire an extra pick or two.

If we pass on a QB this year, I'd be all in on A J McCarron next year. Of course, so will probably alot of other teams.

Front office is putting on a full court press w/ Romo making sure he knows we love him and want him for the next 4-5 years. Hope is he signs cheap(er) than market value.

You can't say that then draft a young QB.

Looking for his replacement now would be hte smart thing to do... but we seldom do the smart thing.

You draft Bray this year, and he's the better QB going into the 2015 season, if not sooner.

Keep an eye out for Nassib as well. Those are the two I like this year. Both have strong arms and good accuracy.

SJ is saying they'd like to re-sign Romo to a 3 or 4 yr extension, even if the deal is actually longer its most likely structured as a shorter deal.

Certainly nothing wrong with drafting a QB this year, and regardless of what they do with Romo I dont think that has an impact to whether they definitely would or wouldnt draft a QB THIS year.

I think Orton is a free agent after this season as well.

Can't argue that.

I think McCarron is good at Alabama, but I don't see him being a bigtime QB in the NFL.

I will regret it, but I like EJ Manuel quite a bit. His big arm and mobility intrigue me. I'm also not as down on Landry Jones as most people are.

I'm old school, I prefer the pocket passer's of the league. No knock on Cam, Kaepernick, RG3, or Wilson but sooner or later these defenses will figure them out.

It's good to have a mobile QB but not running like these guys do. One of these days a linebacker is going to come up and deliver a blow that the QB can't recover from.
