OBSERVATION DECK:
Here's what I saw from the sixth Cowboys' training camp practice Wednesday from the Alamodome in San Antonio:
• The kickoff coverage team struggled early in the afternoon practice on three consecutive kickoffs. Safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah would have scored on two kickoffs down each sideline and in between rookie WR Dwayne Harris had about a 60-yard return down the right side of the field.
• Second-year OL Sam Young (Notre Dame) struggled throughout practice lined up at left tackle. Early on, linebackers DeMarcus Ware and Brandon Williams beat him badly for would-be sacks. Late in practice, Ware beat Young again for another would-be sack of Tony Romo. Ware also tipped a pass away from Tony Romo to the left flat.
• LB Anthony Spencer had his first standout practice of training camp. He gave Cowboys' running backs fits all day. He was in the backfield to stop Lonyae Miller for a loss on a running play early on and then stopped Miller again in the backfield on a swing pass to the left flat. In red zone work late in practice, Spencer knocked down a Tony Romo pass near the line of scrimmage.
• Undrafted rookie free agent WR James Cleveland from Houston struggled to catch passes. He had a drop early in wide receiver drills and later dropped a short pass to the flat, screaming loudly in disgust. WR Titus Ryan also dropped two passes in receiver drills. Rookie WR Dwayne Harris also had a drop over the middle.
• In team drills early in practice, third-string QB Stephen McGee hooked up with WR Kevin Ogletree on a well-executed deep pass that went for a touchdown. McGee faked a handoff and let the ball fly, hitting Ogletree in stride as he crossed the field, beating CB Ross Weaver and safety Barry Church. Later in 7-on-7 drills, Ogletree beat rookie CB Josh Thomas on a fade pass to the right corner of the end zone.
• DE Alex Daniels was quick into the backfield for a would-be sack on QB Stephen McGee.
• Early in practice, WR Manuel Johnson short-armed a ball over the middle for a drop. Later in 7-on-7 work, he redeemed himself with a nice catch on the right side of the end zone matched up one-on-one with CB Terence Newman.
• Safety Barry Church upended WR Manuel Johnson on an end-around, finishing the tackle with a hard takedown. Not long afterward, Church dropped an easy interception from Tony Romo. Church also had a nice pass breakup in 7-on-7 work against TE Martin Rucker.
• Starting RB Felix Jones has a great run midway through practice, breaking away in the open field and down the sideline for a big gain.
• Rookie center Bill Nagy and DE Clifton Geathers began pushing each other after a play in team drills. Following the last of Nagy's pushes, Geathers swung his right arm up and slapped Nagy hard to the right-side of his helmet. Nagy responded by walking back to the offensive huddle.
• First-round draft pick OT Tyron Smith had a false start in team drills lined up across from LB DeMarcus Ware, who has consistently beat him on pass rushes.
• In red zone work, the defensive out-performed the offense. The offense had two touchdowns but misfired on several passes. LB Bradie James made a tackle for loss on a run by RB Phillip Tanner. Reserve center Phil Costa had a fistful of NT Jay Ratliff's jersey on one play that would have been a holding penalty.
• The Cowboys finished their red zone team drills in impressive fashion. Undrafted rookie free agent WR Raymond Radway continued to impress by making a touchdown catch on a back-shoulder fade pass against rookie CB Josh Thomas. After the catch, Radway and OT Jermey Parnell celebrated with a jumping, hip bump.
• Two Cowboys offensive linemen were injured during the team's field goal attempts. Starting RG Montrae Holland injured his left knee and undrafted rookie free agent OG Pepa Letuli sprained his right ankle. Holland went back into team drills later and said after practice that he's fine.
• Backup QB Jon Kitna tripped after taking a snap early in practice and later mishandled a snap from center.
• LB Sean Lee dropped what would have been an easy interception of a Tony Romo pass. Lee immediately dropped to the ground and did push-ups, drawing an ovation from the fans.
• Cowboys owner Jerry Jones patrolled the sidelines much of practice. At one point, with Tony Romo nearby, he teased recently signed offensive linemen Doug Free and Kyle Kosier about all their money now.
• Starting kicker David Buehler continued his training camp struggles by going 2-of-4 on field goal attempts, missing wide left on 49- and 53-yard tries. Buehler is now 20-of-29 in camp. Meanwhile, undrafted rookie free agent Dan Bailey (Oklahoma State) made all three of his attempts to improve to 25-of-27 in camp.
• Safety Danny McCray struggled in pass coverage in 7-on-7 drills. TE Martellus Bennett caught a touchdown against him over the middle and WR Miles Austin beat him from the slot position for a touchdown over the middle.
• After practice, WR Dez Bryant showed off his arm strength by firing a ball 60 yards into the end zone with his left arm.
• During defensive drills, new coordinator Rob Ryan told a group of linebackers that there would be a lot of checks in the red zone.
