Garrett rarely singles out guys, but mentioned Lonyae Miller and Martelus Bennett as standouts thus far.

Garrett said he doesn't have a hard and fast rule that injured starters get to keep their job when they come back. Hear that Orlando?

I hope Martellus gets it this year. And if Orlando plays well in these preseason games, I'd make Newman earn his job back.

Shit, he's probably better off coming off the bench.

• Rookie center Bill Nagy and DE Clifton Geathers began pushing each other after a play in team drills. Following the last of Nagy's pushes, Geathers swung his right arm up and slapped Nagy hard to the right-side of his helmet. Nagy responded by walking back to the offensive huddle.

I like this Nagy already. 2nd fight of training camp.

We need more toughness in the offensive line. I like it.

I don't like that he lost the fight...but oh well.

I don't think he lost the fight. I think he proved his point and didn't want to hold up practice any longer. When you choose to walk away, it isn't always the other guy that made you do that. This guy seems to have a head on his shoulders which is good for a center.

Todd Archer's practice observations

By Todd Archer

** Allowed to practice for the first time during camp with the CBA settled, CB Bryan McCann returned punts and kickoffs. Still no sign of Dez Bryant on the punt return team. He could be just a situational guy on punt returns.

** Before the workout, TE Martellus Bennett practiced catching passes with one hand. The other day he mentioned how Tampa Bay’s Kellen Winslow does the same.

** The defense worked on defending Hail Mary plays during its teaching period. Interesting to see LBs DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer double-team a receiver at the line to delay the takeoff before they went to rush the passer.

** The first-team offense ended a two-minute drill without a touchdown when a blitz forced QB Tony Romo to throw the ball earlier than he wanted to WR Dez Bryant. Earlier in the drive, Bryant cut inside and failed to get out of bounds, which kept the clock running. As the play unfolded, Romo yelled to get out of bounds.

** DE Igor Olshansky had a tackle for loss on Lonyae Miller during the inside run portion of practice. With the additions of Marcus Spears, Kenyon Coleman and Jason Hatcher, Olshansky will have to make more plays like that.

** Romo’s prettiest throw of the day was on a comeback to the wide side of the field to Bryant that was just over the fingertips of Ware. He also had a nice check-off to Miles Austin in the slot when the receiver was able to slide away from CB Orlando Scandrick.

** The No. 1 offense had a bad stretch during a portion of team drills when three plays went like this: Victor Butler sack, mix-up with WR Kevin Ogletree and a dropped deep ball by Jesse Holley, who was practicing for the first time in camp, as well.

** Coleman showed some rust with an offside penalty, but he also showed some force when he shoved OT Sam Young to the ground on a pass rush move that forced an early Jon Kitna throw.

** S Collin Zych forced a fumble on Bennett, knocking the ball free just as Bennett started to turn up field. S Andrew Sendejo picked up the recovery.

** Kickers David Buehler and Dan Bailey made their “mayday” field goals from 44 and 51 yards, respectively, as the coaches put the players through end-of-game situations.

**S Danny McCray had a nice breakup of a pass in the end zone to Jason Witten in the two-minute drill. McCray worked on the first-team dime package.

Montrae Holland just went to locker room during walkthru. Hurt his knee the other day. Rookie David Arkin now at right guard.

I dont know what our cap situation is, but we need to sign a guard. Holland shouldn't even make the team.

I actually think they are waiting to see who gets cut in the preseason, so maybe after the third preseason game. Jerry has harped on holland for some reason for years, so someone is telling him he can play. Hopefully we get better there. I would just assume sign brian waters personally.

Coleman is stout at the point, If Young doesn't play lower he is going to get stuffed all day. Upper body strength for Coleman impressive.

With Free and Smith on the edge, Phillips and Witten too, offense will do a much better job of getting ball outside and down hill. Athletes.

When Ratliff is on the move laterally down the line, he is almost impossible for the backside guard to cut him off.

McCann , Ball and Scandrick in the nickel. Scandrick on the slot blitz gets home clean. He has a real feel for how to get things done.

Watching Elam double on the outside with Ball, he saw the route quick enough but didnt drive quick enough. Scouts talked about this with him

Observations from Day 8 of Cowboys training camp practice

OBSERVATION DECK:
Here's what I saw from the eighth Cowboys' training camp practice Friday afternoon from the Alamodome in San Antonio:

• Undrafted rookie free agent WR Lyle Leong (Texas Tech) had his best practice yet Friday afternoon. Leong made a one-handed catch during receiver drills. Later in team drills, Leong made a circus catch over the middle. The football hit one hand, then the other and he dove to catch the ball just before it hit the ground.

• Undrafted rookie free agent WR James Cleveland (Houston) couldn't make the catch over the middle on a ball that came in a little high but hit his hands. WR Tysson Poots dropped a short screen pass with no one around him.

• Undrafted rookie free agent linebackers Orie Lemon (Oklahoma State) and Alex Albright (Boston College) got into the backfield to blow up a running play.

• Undrafted rookie free agent WR Raymond Radway (Abilene Christian) dropped a pass. Radway blew past rookie CB Josh Thomas again, but the Cedar Hill native recovered in time to break up the deep pass along the sideline. Later in team drills, Radway beat Thomas down the sideline again and made a nice catch on a deep pass just inbounds and in front of the end zone.

• CB Orlando Scandrick came on a blitz and would have sacked the quarterback. Not long afterward, Tony Romo passed the ball to the right slot and Scandrick dropped a sure interception that hit both of his hands.

• WR Manuel Johnson dropped a pass over the middle and was hit hard by safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah. Johnson was slow to get up but came away uninjured.

• NT Jay Ratliff lined up at safety alongside safety Gerald Sensabaugh in one of new coordinator Rob Ryan's defensive plays. That makes four positions he's played so far in training camp, including defensive end and linebacker.

• During two-minute work, the Cowboys used a defensive set with linebackers DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer on the line of scrimmage outside of NT Jay Ratliff. Behind the three were LB Bradie James and seven defensive backs.

• For the first time in camp, the Cowboys practiced two plays they hope they don't use this season: the Hail Mary and a short pass underneath deep coverage in which several Cowboys used laterals in an effort to get into the end zone. The ball eventually went from WR Dez Bryant to WR Miles Austin to QB Tony Romo. After Romo ran toward the middle of the field, the whistle was quickly blown to end the play.

• LB Sean Lee made a hard takedown of RB Lonyae Miller in the backfield for a loss. Miller quickly responded with a strong run, breaking through a hole along the line of scrimmage and getting into the secondary untouched.

• The Cowboys fumbled a double-reverse in the backfield.

• QB Tony Romo scrambled to his right away from pressure up the middle and WR Jesse Holley dropped a short pass to the sideline.

• TE Martellus Bennett didn't turn around to catch a pass by Tony Romo down the left sideline in which he was open on the play.

• RB Phillip Tanner of Kimball also had a nice run in which he took advantage of the offensive line creating a big hole up front. Tanner reached the secondary untouched.

I don't believe it. We always intercept the ball.
