Sean Lee just showed me something that a nickel backer needs to do and thats carry the tight end across the field. Good position in route

Not looking good for Buehler. He's tough, I like him but if Bailey keeps out kicking him then we're gonna have to go with the rookie.

MacMahon: Keith Brooking strains hamstring

Keith Brooking strains hamstring
July, 29, 2011

By Tim MacMahon

SAN ANTONIO -- Linebacker Keith Brooking flung his helmet to the ground in frustration moments after making an interception that he might have returned for a touchdown.

That's because Brooking strained his hamstring en route to the Alamodome end zone. The Cowboys won't know the severity of the injury until Brooking is further evaluated Saturday.

Brooking, a 14-year veteran, has proven to be one of the most durable players in the NFL. He hasn't missed a game since suffering a knee injury in his second season, a span of more than a decade.

Second-year linebacker Sean Lee will get more work with the first-team defense during Brooking's absence.

Cowboys practice report

Cowboys practice report
July, 29, 2011 7:43 PM CT
By Calvin Watkins

SAN ANTONIO -- The Cowboys added three players to their roster on Friday as they conducted a walkthrough and a practice in shells.

Defensive lineman Lawon Scott, running back Frank Warren and cornerback Alex Ibiloye.

*It was funny and sad in a way to see the Cowboys conduct business on Friday. Jerry Jones pulled defensive coordinator Rob Ryan away from team drills and asked him to get on the phone and speak with free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. Ryan's sales pitch worked but then the Eagles came in at the last minute and signed him. As Ryan was talking on the phone, cornerback Terence Newman was making plays in front of him. Newman said he wouldn't speak with reporters after practice.

*Keith Brooking picked off two passes in the walkthrough and one more in the afternoon session. After snagging one, he sprinted down the field, only to come up hurt. Brooking strained a hamstring and his status is uncertain long-term. After Brooking pulled up hurt, he slammed the ball and helmet down to the turf. With Brooking out it gives more reps for Sean Lee. Also, Tashard Choice is out two-to-four weeks with a calf strain. Andre Gurode (knee), Bruce Carter (knee) and DeMarco Murray (hamstring) did rehab work. Mike Jenkins got his left ankle re-taped during practice, but returned.

*One thing we're noticing with this Cowboys defense is movement. There are linemen moving around from one end to the other and linebackers nearing the line of scrimmage. Sometimes, safeties come up and fake the blitz. Igor Olshanksy, who is a defensive end, was lined up over the center. Then there was a blitz from DeMarcus Ware and Jenkins from the same side of the field. One time at least seven players were hovering over the offensive line. The corners are playing a combination of man and zone and no linebacker is immune from dropping back into coverage as evident by Ware doing it.

*How many wide receivers will the Cowboys keep on the roster? It's an interesting debate given how only three, Miles Austin, Dez Bryant, Kevin Ogletree and Manuel Johnson have played in a NFL game. It seems Austin, Bryant and Ogletree will make the roster, there's an unknown after that. Receiver Titus Ryan had one drop on Friday in which he was wide open. Raymond Radway, a rookie from Abilene Christian, made a diving catch on Thursday, but dropped one on Friday.

*The kickers were at it again on Friday and Dan Bailey took the lead from David Buehler. Bailey went 5-5 on field goal tries from 33, 35, 38, 41 and 44 yards. He made a 33-yarder with the rush off the edge with no issues. Buehler had some problems. he went 3-5, missing from 38, 41 and 44 yards. Of the misses, Jenkins and Newman came flying off the edge to bother him.

*With no Tashard Choice and DeMarco Murray on the field to practice as they nurse back from injuries, it gave some younger running backs a chance to get some carries and Lonyae Miller is doing a nice job hitting the hole and protecting the ball from getting stripped. Phillip Tanner and Frank Warren ran through holes well and didn't seemed lost.

*While Dez Bryant can make the easy and hard catch because he's so talented. There were times on Friday he struggled to make a catch under tight coverage. On a deep ball along the sidelines, Newman knocked a pass away from Bryant. But receivers coach Jimmy Robinson liked the effort because he slapped five with Bryant after the play.

This is what I'm most excited about this season. I can't wait to see what Rob Ryan has for us on game day.

Ryan just brought a slot blitz from McGee's backside with Josh Thomas that would have hurt him. Thomas has nice upper body strength on film

Cowboys scouts have to love this Young, Arkin, Nagy and Smith were the OL in on that last play. Good work against a DC that is bringing it.

Sometimes you just forget how good Witten is when it comes to working the middle of the field. OL + Backs pick up blitz, Romo off to him.

Was not as high on Nagy as I was the other draft picks. Looks like a battler in first two reps. Not pretty technique but stayed in front.

BryanBroaddus Bryan Broaddus
Good reps by Arkin and Young back to back. Both with good sets then punch. Able to control rushers.

Some over extension by Smith in his first two 1-on-1 reps against Butler. Needs to get his shoulders back or he is going to get snatched.

If any of you guys get to go to Training Camp could you do me a favor? Could you tap Jerry Jones on the shoulder and let him know Free Agency has begun? Thanks in advance. Maybe point out that we currently have pure garbage at Safety right now and we really don't have anyone to play RG next to rookie RT Tyron Smith? Thanks again.

I like my front offices like I like my offense and defense. Aggressive. So far we took a knee on 1st and 2nd down.
