Watching Tyron Smith do the "mirror drill" where he reacts to the defender is impressive. No struggle at all then a good punch.

I love this kid more than I've loved any offensive lineman since Erik Williams.

Maybe you and Broaddus can tag team him.

Find myself just watching Smith work at LOT. Lissemore has yet to sniff a play in the last three reps.

Nice PBU by CB Chris Randle on a deep pass.

Smith was a little overextended on that last pass set. Will need to get his shoulders back against rushers like Ware and Spencer.

Andre Gurode is here wearing a jersey but no shells. He's out for some time recovering from knee surgery.

Just a quick thought here, Tyron Smith is lining up at left tackle and Sam Young is on the right side. Opportunity to get him some work.

We can't stop Lissemore's progress. Please play nicer, Smith.

Buehler goes 4-for-5 on his field goal tries. Missed from 35.

DCStarJEllis Josh Ellis
Rookie kicker Dan Bailey went 5-of-5, including a 35-yarder that bounced off the upright. That's how far Buehler's miss was.

Buehler better sack up. With the kick off change, he doesn't have that ace up his sleeve anymore.

Its good to see young offensive linemen get reps in practice. On the left side has been Smith and Arkin all day. Quality work vs Vets.

Akwasi Owusu-Ansah is hurt. Looks like a cramp.

Just going to be honest here, Holland does not look like he is in good shape at all. He will have to get better. Lack of off season hurt him

AOA now limping to the locker room. Something with left leg....he doesn't need to miss any time.

Don't think rookie FS Collin Zych saw anyone as fast as miles austin at Harvard. Then again he didn't really see miles go past him just now

When has Holland ever looked to be in shape? That's one of the reason why Shanahan let him go even though he brought quality snaps to the Oline for quite a number of games in Denver.

We may have a keeper with Arkin.

Same reason he was run out of New Orleans as well.

Todd Archer's practice observations

July, 28, 2011 Jul 287:48PM CTEmail Print Comments2 By Todd Archer*

Rob Ryan will be aggressive. In the morning walkthrough, he sent Mike Jenkins off the corner on a blitz and did the same with Terence Newman in the afternoon.

* Liked what I saw from rookie FB Shaun Chapas as a pass catcher, reaching out for one pass, but he needs to keep his feet moving when he engages as a blocker.

* Rookie WR Dwayne Harris had a "Welcome to the NFL" moment when a Tony Romo bullet on a slant went through his hands. Later, he was quick to grab a slant from Jon Kitna.

* At one point, all three inside linebackers -- Keith Brooking, Bradie James, Sean Lee -- were on the field at the same time.

* OLB Victor Butler struggled in coverage in his first two years, but he had two pass breakups in 7-on-7 drills on passes to TE John Phillips and Chapas. Butler also had a would-be sack.

* Romo’s final pass of the day came on a deep ball to Miles Austin while rolling to his right. Rookie safety Collin Zych let out a groan as he saw Austin run by him for what would have been a touchdown.

* Defensive linemen have been told to get their hands up in the passing lanes if they can’t get to the quarterback. Jay Ratliff batted down a ball, as did Sean Lissemore.

* Felix Jones took most of the first-team runs, but Tashard Choice took a handful as well. He showed nice patience on his first carry but not too much patience in getting through the hole, keeping a hand on his lead blocker as he ran.

* The Romo-to-Jason Witten combo looked just fine. Witten came up with a one-handed grab along the sideline while being blanketed by a defender.

** This just in: DeMarcus Ware can play. He snuffed out at least two reverses, a run up the middle and was a constant threat in the backfield, too.

** Savvy move by the coaches to run the first- and second-team linebackers and secondary at the same time to speed up the learning process considering the players missed the offseason. Ryan worked with the first team. Linebackers coach Matt Eberflus took the second team. Joe DeCamillis and Chris Boniol did the same during special teams drills.

Observations from the Cowboys' first training camp practice

OBSERVATION DECK
Here's a few quick items from what I saw from the first day of practice Thursday at the Alamodome in San Antonio:

• Safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah fell to the field at the 40-yard line on one of the last plays of 11-on-11 work Thursday afternoon. He had to be helped to the sideline but walked to the locker room. It appeared to be a cramp but he wasn't available to adress the media after practice. He went down trying to defend TE Martellus Bennett on a pass over the middle.

• Quarterback Tony Romo was sharp with his passes coming off such a long layoff following a left collarbone injury. Romo showed great accuracy and his time was on for the most part. His arm motion showed no problems relating to the injury.

• First-round draft pick OT Tyron Smith signed his contract early Thursday and then was taken to school by linebacker DeMarcus Ware, the NFL's best pass rusher. It was a rough first day for the 20-year-old Smith. He played at left tackle and was beat several times by Ware. He also had two false starts. After it was over, Smith said there's perhaps no better way to learn on the job than to go head-to-head with Ware. Ware also said that he plans to help Smith out as much as he can and build a relationship with the youngster.

• Undrafted free agent signee Raymond Radway, the wide receiver from Abilene Christian, was impressive in his first chance to showcase his speed in front of coaches. He made a diving catch along the sideline on a deep pass that was the play of the day and showed great speed on another catch. Texas Tech WR Lyle Leong, also an undrafted free agent, was solid in his first practice and stayed around afterward to catch more passes from a machine.

• WR Teddy Williams, on the other hand, struggled. He dropped several passes and never looked confident in his route running. He continues to be a project for the Cowboys and if he doesn't start holding onto passes won't be around much longer.

• Undrafted free agent signee Dan Bailey, the kicker from Oklahoma State who was the nation's best in 2010, was impressive in his first practice. He made all five of his field-goal attempts, with his 35-yarder bouncing off the left upright. Meanwhile, starting kicker David Buehler missed a 35-yard attempt.

• LB Brandon Williams from Texas Tech and Fort Worth had a good practice. He put pressure on the quarterback a few times and seemed fast off the ball. NT Josh Brent had a nice pass rush up the middle, forcing the quarterback to scramble on one play.

• Dez Bryant looks like a starting WR in this league. He was sharp on opening day, catching all passes his way and showing the speed and athleticism that excites Cowboys' coaches. Meanwhile, Miles Austin had a nice catch along the right sideline on a deep pass to end practice but didn't have any other highlights
