Thats what I don't want to see happen.

I gotta agree with SBK here... but then again, I've never been high on Free. I think he's a great backup, obviously, but I don't want to rely on him at LT and I never thought we got a great push at RT when he replaced Colombo a couple yrs back. I think this past season he was a good point on a very very bad OLine so its easy to say Free is better than he truly is. If you put him on a good line then I think he clearly becomes the weakest link. For example, if you put him on the Giants line.. I don't even think he starts.

I realize that goes against what everyone here thinks... but fans of teams tend to overvalue their players.

Don't get me wrong. I think he's serviceable. I think we can still win this thing with him at RT... I just don't want us to sign him to some deal that he's not even close to being worth just because he's home-grown.

I'd much rather let another team do it and we sign a guy through FA on a small deal then draft our future at RT.

In his first year starting at LT he allowed very few sacks and very few pressures. He also did a good job at RT when he was plugged in at that position in the past. How do you see him as not being a quality OT?

Well you just threw them for a loop right there.

Absolutely right.

Its called difference of opinion... I thought he had a lot of help this past season and he only did a decent job at RT.

Like I said, my main problem with this whole Free situation would be if we signed him to some outrageous deal that he wasn't worth. Otherwise, I'd resign him to a deal that doesn't handicap us without a problem because I know we'd be replacing him in a few years anyway.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, just not sure what you and SBKlueless are seeing in regards to Free. Not only is it easy to see with your eyes, its shown in statistical ratings of him. He's been pretty damn good at both RT and LT.

Im well aware we have a difference of opinion on the matter, which is why i asked how you saw him as not being a quality OT based on his performance this past season. Wanted to see a little more depth from your side of the discussion so i could better understand your opinion of him.

As for help, i honestly believe he had some help at the beginning of the year, but after that, I think Colombo got more help than Free by far.

And define "overpay to keep him" please

In your case, I'm guessing thats virtually any amount.

The fact is you are bitching about something that you have no clue about how it will pan out. I dont think anyone here would think resinging him to a 10yr, 100 million contract would be smart, but if he gets the going rate for a quality starting T, there is nothing wrong with that. He has developed here nicely, is still young and has upside. Those are the types of players good teams keep, not let walk away.

Oh, this is rich.

He was hoping to make it seem like my stance was so far out of left field. Yet somebody else sees it the same way.

We're not alone either. We have been waaaaaay to willing to sign big extensions. It's why we're in the worst cap shape in football with a 6 win team. You better pick and choose carefully before inking another big deal.

Is Doug Free worth it? I would say no. Actually, hell no.

Hey now. Free got less help down the stretch than the worst tackle in football.

Pay the man.

Also, just because there are plays here or there during a game where a LT or RT is getting "help", it doesnt mean they are getting it every play, or are getting it because they are a substandard player. Some plays the help is by design based on what formation or what blitz packagae the other team brings.

Free didnt get any more help than any other T around the league.

Of course you would. Then if some team like the Pats, Eagles or Steelers sign him to a long term deal and he's a productive starter there, you'd talk about 1) how smart they were to do it and 2) How dumb Jones was to let the guy get away

Your a freaking troll about this stuff

Well there's a throwaway line without a hint of truth behind it.

He didn't get more help than Ryan Clady? Jake Long? Really?

Made ya feel good though didn't it?

Generally, you can help one side of the field or the other. You don't normally hold extra blockers in on both sides of the field. Colombo was getting a majority of the help after the first 5 or so games of the season.. because he was doing awful. Free worked on an island alot more than some want to give him credit for.

Well if he signs elsewhere and has a productive career worth the contract, they yes I would say they were smart, I was wrong and we made a mistake.

If troll means honest, then I'm a troll, Rowdy.

I agree that the help shifted as the season went on. But only because of how bad Colombo was. It was either max protect and severely limit your offense or shift the help.
