I'm starting to think Manziel is going to be a good NFL QB. Not elite, because he won't be able to outrun everyone. But he has the jedi. He may not last more than 5 years or so because of his size. But if there's anyone I wouldn't count out, it would be him. If Russell Wilson can be successful in this league, Manziel can.

I hate the name Johnny so I hope we stay away.

I mean, come on... unless you got the lead role in a bad 1980's movie, you shouldnt' go by "Johnny."

I've said that I want us to see us hire Gruden and then bring in an OC with spread experience, like Oregon's OC Scott Frost or Baylor's Philip Montgomery.

Romo's not going anywhere with that contract. But I'd love to have a guy who coached the spread in college and who won't let defenses dictate to us. We have the personnel to run a wide-open offense. I think Romo is great when we spread it out. He wouldn't be a read option-type QB obviously, but he still has the ability to move around in the pocket.
Realistically and not so wild-ass, this is what I'm thinking too.

On Gruden, he's extensively studied these offenses so I think CMD's idea could actually happen.

Wilson also plays on a very QB friendly team...elite running back and probably the best defense on the league. He makes plays, don't get me wrong, but if you had to put the entire game in his hands, like a Romo, I don't think we'd be talking about him in the same way.

True on Wilson, but even if he didn't have that great defense, his coaches are smart enough to adapt their offense to what he does well.

Does anyone doubt that if we had Russell Wilson or Griffin or whoever that Garrett would have him standing in the pocket and never moving around? Hell, that's what he does with Romo.

You are right. Garrett has ruined Romo. He took away the things that Romo was really good at doing. He should have changed the offense to fit Romo. Every year I see less and less of the things that made Romo a good QB. I don't care how his stats look if he is not allowed to do things that can win games. It all started a few years ago when Romo made some changes and announced that he was going to play more like Tom Brady. Romo may be many things , but he is not a classic pocket passer.

I wouldn't hate that. My issue is that we would be using the same faulty architect and wonder why the buildings won't stand. As long as Jerry is behind the football strategy of this team, I have zero faith we will will succeed.

This makes too much sense. That is why it will never happen.

Like others said, I think we already have the personnel in place to run the spread (or a variation of it). Romo still has a few good years left in the tank. He just needs top-level coaching. There's nothing he can learn from this clown combo of Garrett and Wilson.

Maybe not so wild-ass knowing Jerry. But very unlikely.

But let's say we tank the rest of the year. Probably wouldn't hurt if Griffin torched us in Washington and Kelly beat us down the last game of the year.

What would you think if Jerry embraced the new trend and hired (for instance) Kevin Sumlin/Art Briles and drafted (for instance) a Manziel/Mariota type to run a spread type offense. Would you like it?

Yeah, I know this won't happen because of Romo's contract as much as anything. Just wondering if you'd like or hate seeing a radical change in the offense like that.

IMO the fatal flaw in bringing in a college coach as head coach of the Cowboys is that the Jones family would have an even firmer grasp on front office decisions. A college coach who lacks NFL gravitas and NFL credibility would result in Jerry being cast as the expert. The franchise would be justified in relying even more heavily on Jerry. After all, he's been doing NFL contracts, drafts, trades and GM'ing for years and the college coach hasn't done it all.

... and we all know that's not going to work.

The franchise would be better off with a Bill Cowher, even if Cowher isn't a better football coach than Kevin Sumlin/Art Briles. IMO, the single most important qualification for the next Head Coach is that he have the NFL gravitas to go toe-to-toe with Jerry.

Because if he can't do that, nothing else matters.
