There is a distinction among people. Why can't it be noted? It is on job applications. College applications too.

How is the name Redskins exploiting people? It's just a name and it's not a racial slur.

Discrimination doesn't just mean that you're denying Native Americans services. It refers to noting a distinction among a group of people.

That's a very literal interpretation. A more common definition is punishing or penalizing someone unfairly in some way. That certainly doesn't apply to Snyder's Redskins.

They're using a derogatory name towards a race of people to market their team, sell merchandise, etc. How is that not exploitation?

You're using a literal interpretation of the word as well...?

I don't think it's derogatory and neither does the league. White columnists with nothing to write about in the offseason say it is, and they've apparently convinced you as well.

When you use the word "discrimination" in a discussion about race or minorities, naturally I'm going to assume you mean discriminatory in a legal or negative sense.

Legendary QB Theismann Stands by Redskins Name
By Andrew Johnson
June 19, 2013 12:46 PM

Washington Redskins Super Bowl–winning quarterback Joe Theismann weighed in on the controversy surrounding his former team’s name. “I was very proud to play for the Washington Redskins, and I did it to honor Native people in that regard,” he said in an interview.

“I can just tell you that when I put that uniform on, and I put that helmet on with the Redskin logo on it, I felt like I was representing more than the Washington Redskins, I was representing the great Native American nations that exist in this country,” Theismann told South Dakota’s Argus Leader newspaper.

He also recalled a recent visit with an American Indian boy in a nearby hospital, whose family supported the name. “And as I shook his hand the father said to me ‘You’re a Redskin,’ and he said it in a very complimentary way, which was very humbling to me,” Theismann said.

Theismann said a decision to change the team’s name is “totally up to” Redskins’ owner Dan Snyder. Snyder has stated he will “never” change the name.

There's a lot more than "white columnists" who think it's derogatory.

and LOL at the idea that I'm easily convinced by the "white columnists." You're only on this side of the matter because your crushing on Midswat.

It's not my fault you assume incorrectly.

That's not true at all. I'm just very anti-PC and agree with him on this.

Anyway, the name isn't changing so find something else to get offended about.

Who said I was offended? I'm 1/32 Native American, but I'm not easily offended. But I'm not surprised you don't know how to intelligently debate a topic without assuming I'm actually a person affected by the topic.

But for reals guys... Let's just change the name from the San Francisco 49ers to the San Francisco ******s. We can use the rainbow flag on the helmet and have free admission for GLAAD members. Jason Collins can be our PR guy. Chris Culliver is cut immediately.

It's not discrimination, because we're promoting those ******s.

Because ****** (a pejorative) isn't remotely analogous to redskin (a description).

Since you took the stance that you're against the name and called it discriminatory then I assumed you were offended by it. I should have known you would be playing word games. You're an attorney. That's how you and the other 15 million attorneys in this country make a living.

And if you really think you're affected by the term "Redskins," I suggest you stop being such a pussy. That's ridiculous.

I guess it all depends on the intent behind it huh? ****** can be used in a merely descriptive manner as well. You certainly can't claim that "Redskin" has never been used pejoratively.

Then you assumed incorrectly. Appears to be a lot of that going on in here.

I get it... You think you can belittle me by calling me an "attorney." See, I guess even words that aren't innately pejorative can be made to be so. Good one Jon. LOL

A little ironic given the topic, but I doubt you'd grasp that either.

Two things I'm not personally affected by...

1) The term "Redskins."
2) A lack of reading comprehension.

Only one of those is true for you.
