After today, I'm wondering if they (Garrett, front office) would start thinking about the possibility of trading Romo. Maybe not before the trade deadline, but before the draft.
When we signed him, I never thought Romo would be much of an NFL starter. But he worked his tail off and became a really good player. I've been a big fan and supporter since. But the fact is as amazing as he is sometimes, he is one of the most inconsistent starting QB's in the league. Today was a prime example, he was virtually flawless for 35 minutes or so, then absolutely awful the remainder of the game and basically handed the Lions a game they had no business even being close in on a silver platter.
You just have to wonder if he will ever truly "get it". A guy who can be amazing and run off several great games, but then melt down and throw games away. Can he ever become consistent enough to be a championship QB? He's getting up there in age and his trade value is probably as high now as it ever will be. Some QB desperate team might be tempted to give up quite a package of picks to get him.
Its a huge decision but if they think he's always going to be this way, then you have to think seriously about moving on because the way he has played through 4 games this year is the classic case of a "coach killer" type QB. A player who's talent is great, but major lapses in concentration or decision making always leaving you thinking/hoping that "eventually he will get it". Team's who have a "coach killer" type QB can never bench the guy, and are stuck with the inconsistency. Because of the salary and the cap situation involved, team usualyl keep the coack killer QB, and instead sacrifice the HC to keep him. We've all been thinking this for several years now, and we still end up seeing these types of games.
I'm not posting this because I am saying Romo sux or that I want to see us get rid of him. But we wont ever win big if he continues this type of play and that while trading him now (like before the trade deadline) would probably be a step back in the short term, in the long term it potentially could pay huge dividends. I could see a number of teams really interested in getting him. Miami would make alot of sense. They dont have a QB and Romo would be a huge draw in South Florida. Ireland and Sparano are probably about to be run out of town, but you see them both probably pining to get Romo if he were available. I could see Cleveland being really interested. The Raiders would probably be interested. Denver could be interested. Kansas City would probably do backflips to get him. San Fran might be a possibility. Seattle would be a strong possibility. Shanahan would probably love to get him, although I cant imagine Jones and Garrett ever agreeing to send him there. But there could be a substantial bidding war if behind the scenes the team decided to explore trading him. Romo is better than Jay Cutler is, and the Donkos got a windfall for moving him there. (Although they wasted the picks in return)
Its interesting to think about. What if somebody offered the Cowboys a couple of #1's and maybe something else for him? You could see them possibily putting together a package to land the #1 pick next year, and Andrew Luck would be a huge get for Garrett and the Cowboys, much like Aikman was in 1989. Or what if they turn the team over at some point this year to Steven McGee, and McGee plays at a high level? He has made leaps and bounds improvement the past two off-seasons. His decision making is good, his accuracy has really improved and he has a much stronger arm than Romo, in addition to being very mobile. The players also seem to really respond to McGee when he does play. If McGee could become the starter, you are really sitting pretty with what we already have in place, plus a multitude of high draft picks to further strengthen the team from the Romo deal.
Just something to chew on and discuss.
