Or another step closer toward abolishing free speech, either way...

New Jersey will ban trash-talking in high school sports starting this fall and could investigate individuals who violate the anti-trash-talking policy.

According to the Associated Press, "the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association and the state Attorney General's Office announced the new policy on Wednesday," and high school athletes "could be in trouble if they make harassing statements related to gender, race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or religion. Referees would also be required to report incidents for possible further investigation."

Acting New Jersey Attorney General John J. Hoffman told the Post-Courier: "High school sports should be about building character and instilling life-lessons about grace, courage, t
eamwork, and adversity. Sometimes, we lose sight of those lessons on the field and in the stands."
He added, "I thank the coalition for bringing the issue to our attention, and the NJSIAA for taking steps to address an important concern. We stand ready to work with both groups to ensure compliance with the new rules, going forward."

This country is so fucked,so degenerate from the one I came into in 1991,that I am close to root for it's demise.
Not because I hate America, quite the contrary,I love it...it gave me a chance and I made the most of it,but because Americans are fucking with something they cannot handle, and a lesson is due.
from now on I am only speaking Spanish.
The first American that tells me to speak English,I will tell him to fuck off,and don't complain.30 million illegals are here and they have no problem with them getting amnesty....at least I produce and pay taxes,so fuck it.Spanish only.
White people need to wake the fuck up too.
Seriously,I am brown and I am warning you.
You think you have control of the game when in reality, the game has control over you.
You are discriminated against, ridiculed constantly, and you don't bat an eye.
Scholarships,adoptions...you pay 2x as the next "minority".
Shit, they make movies about how inadequate you supposedly are(White Men Can't Jump,Great White Hype).
All thinly veiled shit with a subliminal meaning.
Wake the fuck up already and take your country back.

Holy rant Batman. Most likely it's kids talking shit in the gym where everyone can hear it and ends up causing fights.

high school athletes "could be in trouble if they make harassing statements related to gender, race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or religion.

High school students can't do this in the halls at school so why should they be able to while playing a sport?

They charged a guy in NY the other day with endangering a child X 4 for over powering the 4 kids and locking them in a closet, that were destroying his Father in Law's house that they'd been working on for a year and had just finished. The man's looking at 4 years for protecting his family's property. I'm blown the fuck away at how fucked up our Country is. The man should get a parade for not killing them, 'cause I would have!

They aren't Eliminating Free speech. It's high school sports, there isn't any place for that type of stuff. Figures the Neo Cons would get all up in arms over something good and positive because they have no idea what they are talking about. Wonder when JBond will spout off.

Participating in sports is a privilege, if you can't follow the rules you lose the privilege. If your a fan your paid admittance doesn't give you the right to act like an ass in front of kids. This should happen in every state, I'm forwarding the article to my own State Association.

There's way more room for freedom of expression than there is for a states AG getting involved in such nonsense. If a school wants to set parameters, that's their right, for the legal system to be involved and pretend it's a civil rights matter is clown shoes.

The schools decide to belong to those type of organizations. They aren't required. Employees of the Member schools make their executive committee, each member school has a vote on whether or not to accept the policies and rules. Belonging means once passed they have to abide by the rules. This isn't the state or government doing anything. Their is no place for that type of stuff in high school athletics to suggest otherwise is moronic. The states attorney general's involvement is inconsequential. It isn't a law. It's a set of rules to be followed at NJIAA events.

Involving the AG and the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights broadens the issue beyond a simple matter of an organizational choice. I doubt there are going to be many disabled kids involved in HS sports and the chance of deriding someone's religion as athletic 'trash talk' is pretty remote. Pretending a great majority are this sensitive is just false and it's a bad excuse to get state institutions involved. They have better things to do. I'm offended by the state of Camden. They should consider cleaning that frigging city up instead of pretending that punishing people for talking creates civility

You don't know what you're talking about.

The State Athletic Association developed and will enforce the policy. The schools who all are voluntary members of the state association had representation on the executive committee and had an opportunity to vote for the policy.

You are harping on the fact that the AG and Civil Rights association endorsed it or maybe helped them develop the language in the policy as some kind of government encroachment on Free Speech. That's idiotic.

You clearly haven't been involved in or known anyone involved High School sports at least not recently. I've seen kids that were blind playing football, down syndrome playing basketball, kids with missing limbs wrestle, swim, and do track and field. There are children who participate with disabilities. This day and age there is still racism on the high school athletic field, I've seen and hear opposing players and fans deride athletes because they were Muslim, because they were black, Asian, and Samoan.

It seems your political ideology has you so geared to see a governmental abuse when there isn't any.

Maybe you should go read the entire (short) article. Especially the part where it states they will be reported to the NJDCR.

And no, we're not talking special olympics and rare instances, we're talking every day sporting events where 99.9% of the participants aren't disabled, nor could be to compete.

And no matter what we may have 'heard' or witnessed in our lives, we don't need to legislate and 'investigate' every matter of poor social choices. Like I said there are greater concerns than hurt feelings. The idea that a government agency is involved concerning any form of verbal expression is already an abuse. We don't need nanny's to tell us to mind our manners, and we certainly don't investigative action into them.

If a law is broken (the state has a state Anti Bullying law) the State Athletic Association has no way to prosecute a crime. In PA the PIAA has a rule if you hit an official you could be fined and jailed. They have no way to prosecute a legal violation of course they would have to be involved in that capacity.

We are talking about children playing a game. There is no need for that kind of talk in High School Athletics period. You seem focused on disabilities and not on the other aspects of the policy. Those instances aren't as rare as you may think.

And no matter what we may have 'heard' or witnessed in our lives, we don't need to legislate and 'investigate' every matter of poor social choices.
I will reiterate there isn't any place for that kind of talk or behavior from adults, kids, coaches, or anyone at high school athletic events. The state athletic association saw an issue, developed a policy to resolve the situation. A state association where membership is voluntary, and the members have a say in who represents them on the committee, and have a say in the passing of the rules and polices. The State Association has no way to prosecute broken laws, they'd have to involve the proper authorities of laws are broken.

Like I said there are greater concerns than hurt feelings. The idea that a government agency is involved concerning any form of verbal expression is already an abuse. We don't need nanny's to tell us to mind our manners, and we certainly don't investigative action into them.
It isn't about hurt feelings, and it isn't about government involvement. It is about making high school athletics what it is supposed to be about.

Quality interscholastic athletic program are vital to the positive social, physical, and educational development of students. Interscholastic athletic program enhance and support the academic mission of the school system. They are committed to promoting the proper ideals of sportsmanship, ethical conduct, and fair play at all athletic contests. They support high standards of good citizenship, along with the regard for the rights of others.

You really don't get what is happening.

The pressure to curtail and/or eliminate this type of behavior should not come from the government, be it the school or the Attorneys General. It should be a social pressure that eradicates it.

Sort of like this... what did you do when you heard these things? Did you go tell someone, hoping they would squelch the person with their authority? Or did you go and tell that person how small-minded and ignorant they were. You do it a lot on here, just wondering if you're just as bold when you don't have a keyboard in front of you.

Not effing with you, 2233... I think it's a valid point.

I agree and this is a State Association of Public and Private schools, all have a say in the policies of the organization. All of them are members of the state organization by choice, and it isn't a governmental agency.

I told them to stop and if they didn't, I reported it. It's how I roll.

It's a fair question but is irrelevant to the conversation. If you are Joe Fan at an event and someone is being an ass you can tell them to stop but you don't have the authority to make them stop. If they don't stop you have no choice but to involve the officials that would have authority to make it stop.

Trash talk in a game isn't bullying. Some people can tell the difference. You criticize my view that government oversight is wrong, yet have no problem with personal oversight. The intrusion into another person's expression and how its interpreted. Hiding this sort of garbage behind sensivity is just that: garbage. Children have been playing, talking a growing without the nanny aid and yet another waste of our resources, when real shit conditions exist elsewhere.

You're right about adults and coaches and overbearing parents talking crap. That's another matter. High School students talking crap isn't lawlessness and something to get the law involved with. It's unecessary, wasteful and part of a delusion that spanking people for naughty behavior is necessary. Real progressive. Treat high school students like they're in kindergarten. :/

A mission statement isn't gospel. Some people play sorts because they enjoy it. They're not searching for life's meanings and if they are through sports, they're lost and need greater help.

I do get what is happening.
