Dez Bryant, Cowboys finalizing long-term contract

Take Dez Bryant to the bank.

The Dallas Cowboys and their franchised-tagged star wideout are finalizing a long-term contract ahead of Wednesday's 4 p.m. ET deadline, a team source told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.

The new pact puts to bed a summer-long drama that saw negotiations flatline between Dallas and Bryant, who threatened to skip training camp and regular-season games without a new long-term contract.

Bryant is worth every penny he'll earn. Coming off a monster campaign that saw the 26-year-old set a career mark with 16 touchdowns, Dez rolls into September as the heart and soul of a Cowboys offense with Super Bowl aspirations.

Bryant has emerged over five seasons as a bona fide top-five NFL wideout: Where you place him in that group boils down to preference. Yes, he occasionally vanishes for a quarter, but Dez makes up for it with explosive stretches of play that leave defenses scattered.

As rugged and talented at the point of catch as any receiver around, Bryant has pumped out three straight 1,200-plus-yard campaigns despite constant double teams. If the Cowboys remain concerned about his off-the-field ups and downs, there is zero question about the fire Bryant brings to the field.

With Dez set to sign a contract, Dallas marches into September with a talented cast of wideouts that also includes Terrance Williams and the underrated Cole Beasley. If the Cowboys can keep up their ground game after losing of DeMarco Murray, Big D remains a threat to travel deep into the playoffs this winter.

His holdout would be a huge distraction for a team with real Super Bowl aspirations, throw in the Dallas Cowboy factor and it will sidetrack the whole season.
It's good to have this off the table. Would much rather have a happy Dez than a disenchanted one.

You got very close, Dooms.

And yeah, worry about the consequences down the road. For now a happy Dez is practically a must for a good season.

COLLUSION!

I was only a little more generous but of course, we haven't seen the whole deal yet, no telling what incentives and bonuses it contains.

It's good to have this over.

Dez go this deal

According to my sources it's 43 mil guaranteed. 70 in total over 5 years I believe is the final figure he told me just now.

Knew it. Had the deal all along. I think they just created drama and suspense due to it being a slow offseason between now and training camp.

retarded?

seems like less than market value for the top 1 or 2 most productive receivers in the league
He signed a worse deal than I was offering, which you said there was "no way" it could happen.

That's retarded.

It IS the market value. Now.

Megatron's deal wasn't done in this market and was never relevant to this market.

There used to be a time where of get really excited about this shit.

Is it the red genius that takes the excitement out of things? Bottom line is, can go 12-4, have the number 1 running back in the league, top WR, QB and OL in the league and still have a coach that loses to Dom Capers the same way he has the last four times the teams have met. In other words, the red genius offers no confidence that any amount of talent or momentum the team has will continue. Dez being signed is great, but the team lost 2/5ths of the offense in Murray and the running game last year was responsible for 1/3 of the first downs. Without a strong running back present, there is no pressure for Jason to permit running plays as often as he had to last season. The Patriots won the SuperBowl without a dominating WR and with a make shift RB committee because the Belichicks, Carroll's, Payton's, McCarthys, John Harbaughs and Caughlins actually out coach their opponents with any means necessary. If anyone is guilty of Randle's "leaving meat on the bone" it's Jason.

So, yes, this signing is really only exciting if somehow it changes the offense. Dez, Romo, Witten and the offensive line really can't get much better, they had and have enough to win right now as long as their coach doesn't inhibit them.
