Everyone - publicly, anyway - is fighting to be the most "progressive" guy on the block.
That describes some people here in this thread... (pep, 2233, mb4). Falling all over each other to prove that each one is more tolerant than the other.

I've always thought that sort of thing was ridiculous.

I can't say fuck. But I can say screwing, sex, humping, fornication, coitus, etc. All words meaning the same thing. But one of them is vulgar.

I can't say shit, but I can say crap, defecation, stool, dooty (sp?), etc.

There's no logic.

You can't say "the N word" (I am not quite sure when it became the unmentionable) but I bet if Cooper said coon, burrhead, sambo or spook nobody would care. They'd just view him as some ignorant hillbilly being racist and it wouldn't become some supposed statement about society in general.

Again, it is the one word that every fake hipster attaches to in order to protest to make themselves feel better.

Poor example. There is no possible way a man can give birth. But anybody can be hit with a racial slur. Gook, slope, honky, cracker, wetback, or whatever. So yeah, while there is no possible way a man could know what childbirth is like, they could know what it feels like to be discriminated against. Who is anybody to say which one is worse? Black people had it bad, sure. So did Indians. So did Jews. Etc...
It's not a poor example. There's no possible way you know what it's like to be called a n-word.

Ask a black person this. They will probably say it depends on who is addressing you in this fashion. And that is patently hypocritical and illogical.

Want to eliminate the "hurt"?

Quit talking about it. Quit saying it amongst your friends. Quit using it in the songs of the subculture. Make it a word that is reserved for something as hateful as it is supposed to be.

Personally, I think the words jiggaboo and porch monkey are pretty bad and mean the same thing.

Do you think the mayor of Philly would be demanding Riley Cooper be pilloried in the public square if he said that?

No. It is just because it is something people have latched onto, while ignoring the liberal use of the very exact same word and using the cop out "well, it depends who is saying it".

You are contradicting yourself. You say you can’t measure the amount of offense, then you do exactly that by saying this word is the most offensive. Why is this word more offensive than the others? I don’t disagree with your stance, i just seen an unbalanced playing field.
I'm not contradicting myself. I'm using your words to answer your question. If I were to list the top 10 racial slurs, this one would be number one.

Why, because he's white?

Pep, you really have lost it here. Without really putting up much of a fight, either.

You're so desperate to show how forward thinking you are that you've reduced yourself to a caricature of profession.

Hey, I wish black people wouldn't use the word. I agree it's hypocritical.

But that doesn't mean everyone can use the word in a derogatory fashion and have it be ok.

Only because it has been adopted as a symbol.

Yes, you are. Embarrassing yourself while you're at it.

LOL

I've lost what?

Bunch of white dudes on the internet are arguing the n-word shouldn't be offensive.... That's a slam dunk. It doesn't NEED much of a fight.

Not saying what Cooper did was okay.

I am more referring to this over the top and frankly idiotic uproar like it means that we are farting around in the 1930s and there is real racism.

So now only white dudes can use the N-word in a derogatory fashion, no one else? Seriously?

I feel, for lack of a better word, privileged.
