He pulled out of the Jets search last yr reportedly because the Jets told him he could pick his own assistants.

you mean "couldn't" right?

That just causes my respect for him to skyrocket and it also rules him out of the Dallas job since he's unwilling to drop his cojones off at the front door to jeri's office

Some Zoners acting like Rhule should basically be the only name on the list. Like he's a combination of Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson and Bill Walsh all rolled into one.

Not saying the guy isn't a good coach and shouldn't be considered, but it seems to me people are going way overboard about a guy with a slightly above .500 record at places like Baylor and Temple.

No way would I take him over Urban Meyer though.

I don't trust any body from any message board to get this decision, not me or you (no offense) or anyone. We may get it right but not because we have some great insight or knowledge, we're all just making obvious guesses from limited information. I cant help but think there is someone out there the masses dont know about who has been quietly going about honing his craft for years, thats the guy I'd like to find and empower

I just wish they'd make an exhaustive search with ZERO obstacles set up by the owner & gm with the sole goal being getting the best person for the job and do everything to empower him to succeed.

obviously, wishful thinking unfortunately

The Cowboys are widely expected to be shopping for a new head coach this offseason, and the team’s interest in Urban Meyer is real, as Albert Breer of SI.com writes. Recent reports indicated that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was zeroing in on Meyer and Patriots OC Josh McDaniels — though Oklahoma HC Lincoln Riley could also be a legitimate possibility. Meyer himself said he would “absolutely” accept the Dallas gig if offered.

Breer confirms that Meyer is interested in the Cowboys, and while the SI scribe does not believe Meyer is necessarily dying to get back into coaching, Dallas does check two important boxes for him. One, it’s a flagship organization, and two, it has a roster that looks capable of competing right away. Meyer also has a close relationship with one of the Cowboys’ best players, Ezekiel Elliot, thanks to their days at Ohio State together.

Meyer is undoubtedly one of the most accomplished head coaches in college football history, having compiled a 187-32 career record that includes a whopping 12-3 mark in Bowl Games. He also won three national championships, two with Florida and one with Ohio State.

His success with the Buckeyes led to some NFL interest, and he said in December 2015 that he had spurned an NFL team’s advances. He always seemed content with his collegiate job, but he announced last December that he would retire from coaching after the Buckeye’s Rose Bowl game on January 1, 2019 (which Ohio State won). He cited health concerns as the reason for his decision, which leaves one to wonder if he would welcome the rigors of an NFL post. However, since Dallas does not need to go through a lengthy rebuild, Meyer seems open to considering the opportunity.

Did we forget about coach Payton?

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will almost certainly look to make a flashy hire if he decides not to bring back head coach Jason Garrett next season, and it sounds like his top choice for the job is under contract with another NFC team.

Jon Machota of The Athletic listed several candidates that Jones could target when the season ends, and New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton is among them. While Payton signed a five-year contract extension at the start of the season, Machota expects Jones to “try anything possible” to get the 55-year-old coach to Dallas.

Payton worked on the Cowboys staff as an assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach from from 2003 to 2005. He maintains a close relationship with the Jones family, and there were reports that Jones was talking with him years ago before he signed a previous extension with the Saints. The rumors have persisted since then, and it would not be a surprise if Jones explores a way to land Payton now that he has essentially confirmed he is ready to move on from Garrett.

It would take an awful lot, however. There’s no reason the Saints would want to part with Payton, and the Cowboys would have to surrender multiple high draft picks even if New Orleans had interest in a deal. With the Saints in the middle of another Super Bowl chase and Payton having signed a new contract just months ago, the thought of the coach in Dallas is nothing more than a pipe dream.

Nothing can be ruled out with one of the most prestigious head coaching jobs in sports, but there’s another huge name the Cowboys are eyeing that seems like a more realistic possibility for them.

Sounds like Jerry's getting ready to say, " Welp, I tried to get the guy I wanted, but the dadburn Saints wanted too much, so here's our new head coach, former Northwestern Offensive Coordinator Mick McCall"
Also, Sal, appreciate the posts. Actually thank everyone for posting.

Albert Breer is legit. Jane Slater is legit. Both of them saying the Cowboys have real interest in Urban and are inclined to think he is interested too. My optimism levels are too high right now.

The flaws with Garrett’s systems and style are now well documented. There’s no flexibility...

Beat the man in front you. Let the other team be flexible. We're going to FIGHT, SCRATCH, CLAW, BITE, SPIT, KICK, SCREAM, AND CATERWAULER! Just a sidenote, I always thought scratching and clawing were the same thing? If you claw someone, aren't you scratching them and vice versa?

no opponent-specific game-planning...

Not necessary --- if you beat the man in front of you. We're going to FIGHT, SCRATCH, CLAW, BITE, SPIT, KICK, SCREAM, AND CATERWAULER!

no in-game adjustments...

Beat the man in front of you. Let the other team adjust. We're going to FIGHT, SCRATCH, CLAW, BITE, SPIT, KICK, SCREAM, AND CATERWAULER!

no active involvement in the coaching of players during games.

Telling the players to beat the man in front of them...you can't get any more involved than that. We're going to FIGHT, SCRATCH, CLAW, BITE, SPIT, KICK, SCREAM, AND CATERWAULER!

Just standing, watching, and clapping.

Yeah, but he's going to OUT-stand, OUT-watch, and OUT-clap the other coach.

garrett is a button pusher.. when something goes wrong, the only thing he knows how to do is either A) stop pushing the button, or B) push the button harder.

if all else fails, C) push button repeatedly.
