Ray Sherman has gone from head-coaching candidate with the Dallas Cowboys to out of the organization.
Sherman acwknowledged today that he has been told the Cowboys will not offer him a new contract. Sherman had served as wide-receivers coach for the last four years, and his contract was about to expire.
Sherman had no comment on the decision by head coach Jason Garrett. He brought Sherman into the organizaton.
Sherman on Tuesday interviewed for the head-coaching position to help the Cowboys satisfy the ``Rooney Rule,'' which requires minority candidates be considered for major openings. owner-general manager Jerry Jones and executive vice president-director of player personnel Stephen Jones both raved about Sherman's interview.
Stephen Jones said on Thursday that the club liked Sherman and his failure to get the head-coaching position did not mean he had to leave the organization.
``We wouldn't feel that way at all,'' Jones said. ``I don't think Jason would either. What happened there is we evaluated what was the best for the Cowboys going forward.''
