Ayodele wasn't a starter and wasn't a player Dallas needed on the roster. He was signed as a FA and traded away for a draft pick instead of being released. He played well in Miami but ended up getting cut when they no longer needed him either. He was a stop-gap player for both teams and not a long term player. Dallas received something for nothing by moving him.
Trading away Fasano for a 4th and getting another TE in the 2nd makes it a bad trade. Why give away a quality backup TE that fits well in the run blocking scheme so you can reach on another TE that is a playmaker just like the one you already have? I'll tell you why. Jerry could not sell Fasano jerseys but he did sell plenty of Bennett jerseys.
If you look at that draft however Dallas clearly wanted to upgrade the tight end position from a physical standpoint, more athletic. Just look at the guys brought in at tight end since the garretts arrived. So if you look at the 08 draft jon carlson was the best and went to seattle and bennett and finley were the guys that fit what Dallas likes. Finley was risky with his injuries. So they must have taken bennett knowing he would be gone soon and knowing he was the prototype of what they wanted plus he was healthy.
I dont think it was intended that they would again use a 2 on a tight end it just ended up that way.
they took bennett at 61.
they took fasano at 53 (there target according to norm hitzges was greg jennings who went at 52 thanks to walker leaving)
they got number 100 for him.
its a wierd thing but just circumstantial. They took a tight end in the middle of the 2nd round, the new staff found him a non fit and traded him for the first pick in the 4th and used one of the last picks of the 2nd to replace him. Not really as bad as people have made it out to be.
