Losing Gregory doesn't really make me feel that much worse about our defense.

We'll be bad, but not horrendous. Provided everyone stays healthy. If we start suffering injuries, especially in the secondary, then it could snowball fast.

That is an under statement.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says 'no question' DE Randy Gregory needs treatment after another failed test
By Eddie Sefko

FRISCO -- Cowboys owner and general manager said Wednesday morning that the team has not heard from the NFL about an increased suspension for troubled defensive end Randy Gregory.

At a ceremony christening the Omni Frisco Hotel attached to the new Cowboys' training facility, Jones said Gregory is getting care for his addiction. On Tuesday, multiple sources said Gregory had failed a banned-substance test for a fourth time while a member of the Cowboys and could be facing a longer suspension.

"He is having care right as we speak," Jones said following the open-air ceremony on what eventually will be the pool deck of the hotel. "We're well aware of that. It's very disappointing, but again, it does point out the difficulty you have with addiction. There's no question that he needs the kind of help and care he's getting right now.

Asked whether the league has alerted the Cowboys of a pending longer suspension, Jones said: "I don't have that or an expectation at this particular time. We're basically seeing where he is. We have no official notification from the league. From the standpoint of our team and from the standpoint of his well being we are first and foremost interested in how he can address his addiction and get to where he can function in society first and look to be a football player second.

"We haven't gotten word from the league that he has anything other than a four-game suspension."

While the NFL has the latitude to add another 10 games on top of Gregory's current four-game suspension, that won't necessarily happen. The reason: the purpose of the program is to rehabilitate, not punish. If there are indications that Gregory, despite his struggles, is seriously addressing his addiction, adding 6 games to bring the suspension to 10 is more likely.

Either way, it's another sad chapter for Gregory, whose draft stock in 2015 fell from a certain first-round pick to the No. 60 overall pick in the second round because of the red flags that followed him out of Nebraska.

"We drafted him right where we should have him," Jones said. "He fell from the very top of the board to the second round and you can take risks there where we got him. We do that with injury and other issues. And the idea at that level if you have one that has the high talent grade at that level, those are the risks involved. You're not buying bonds here."
That said, the Cowboys have been considering contingency plans at defensive end because of Gregory's situation.

They have not publicized any potential free-agent targets but Stephen Jones said that the team will be active in its search for help.

"We've obviously been very aware that he's been suspended for four games, so we obviously accounted for that," Stephen Jones said. "Player acquisition is a 365 days out of the year (proposition). We'll always look to get better. When we get in camp, and we see opportunities that we can improve our football team, we'll certainly do that.j

The D was not gonna be good with or with out him. Randy never showed anything on the field and frankly I knew another suspension was coming for him. Another 2nd round wasted pick by this team. Another year of putting it all on your 36 yr old often injured qb. Not fair.

Heard this quote on the radio yesterday, and it's so obvious in Jerry's voice he still doesn't get it. He almost sounds proud in saying, "This is what we do." There's zero regret or acknowledgement that maybe this is a terrible strategy.

Shit like this makes me believe he truly hates the fans and loves sticking it to us every chance he gets.

He could have declined to comment on a hypothetical or really gone off the deep end and admitted failure but hell nah, he doubles down and tells us he'd do it all over again.

When you're a fucking clueless dip shit like jeri, you have to gamble because he's never gonna outsmart or outcoach any team.

I hate that fucking prick

This Mother Teresa shit has got to end. Whatever in-house program they have to keep these guys on the straight and narrow clearly isn't working, and these arrogant assholes know they can embarrass and humiliate Jerry without fear of being cut. Ability and potential don't mean shit if you can't get on the field.

To this day, the Cowboys are still in contact with Joseph Randle, and are still trying to help him. How fucked up is that?

No doubt.

You'd think even someone whose job wasn't on the line would want to do better, though. But Jerry's desire and love for feeling like a risk-taker is greater than his desire to draft better.

With the Cowboys being named the most valuable sport franchise in the world, in Jerry's eyes it is working.

Jones, Cowboys weren’t counting on troubled Gregory this season
BY CLARENCE E. HILL JR.

Owner Jerry Jones said the Dallas Cowboys have not received official word from the NFL on an additional suspension for troubled defensive end Randy Gregory.

But he acknowledges that Gregory is in a treatment facility and won’t joining the team for the start of training camp on Thursday.

Gregory, who was already suspended for the first four games of 2016 for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, has failed another drug test, putting him in the cross hairs of an additional 10-game suspension, according to sources.

“I don’t have that or any expectation at this particular time,” Jones said following at “a topping out” ceremony for the new Omni Frisco Hotel at the Star, the site of the Cowboys headquarters. “We are basically seeing where he is. We have no official notification from your league. We are first and foremost interested in how he can basically address his addiction and get to where he can function in society first and then look to be a football player second.

“It’s very disappointing. And there is no question he needs the kind of health and care he is getting right now.”

Gregory is appealing the suspension for the latest failed test, per sources.

But given his situation and current status in a treatment facility, sources indicate that Gregory might not play at all this season.

Jones said the team continues to support Gregory and wants him to get his life together.

Jones said that Gregory’s battle with dependency is not a surprise and the Cowboys weren’t counting on him to play this year.

“We’ve had an awareness that this potential was there and we have had it throughout the spring,” Jones said. “There are no surprises here. Because of the sanctions and our knowledge of his situation, we didn’t count on him.”

Gregory’s situation is a setback for the Cowboys on the field and off the field.

He is one of three starters on defense who will open the season on the suspended list. Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence is out for the first four games for violating the substance abuse policy. Middle linebacker Rolando McClain will miss the first 10 games for violating the substance abuse policy.

The Cowboys will be fined by the NFL under the club remittance policy for having three players on suspension. That number would have been $250,000 last year. Per the NFL, the policy for this year is still being finalized and the fine won’t be tabulated until the end of the season.

Jones said the Cowboy will not change their philosophy on taking chances on risky players. He said the team has no regrets on taking Gregory on second round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Gregory was a first-round talent out of Nebraska who fell to the second round because of a failed drug test at the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine.

He has subsequently failed five drug tests since being in the NFL and had zero sacks as rookie.

“We drafted him right where we should have,” Jones said. “He fell from the very top of the board to the second round and you can take risks there where we got him. We do that. We do it with injury and we do it with other issues. We are not buying bonds. This isn’t a widows portfolio we are dealing with him. There are going to be some risks involved.”

It will work. Jerry just knows it will. He's not giving up. After all its only been 20 years. Paydirt is t arrightund the corner. It has to be. Jerry can feel it. He can taste it. Its right there just beyond his grasp, but he knows its there.

Ha, David Moore asks first question if all these suspensions are an indictment of the culture they have in place.

Of course Stephen talks about all the successes they've had. Or really? Like where?

Then Garrett says he's never been around a better character team than this one. Telling that the first four or five players he mentions are on offense (i.e. give me credit, give me credit).

Loves the culture, loves the character of this team. :lol

I wish I had saved Hostile's diatribe about Garrett being the next Tom Landry, and his Super Bowl predictions.

Not even Hostile can hear that and believe it - "I've never been around a better character team."
