Cowboys haven't talked with Anthony Spencer's agent since combine, yet to make decision on franchise tag

While a number of teams around the league have already made put the franchise tag on their key free agents, the Cowboys have still not decided on what to do with linebacker Anthony Spencer.
Not only has the team not made a decision but have not talked with Spencer's agent Roosevelt Barnes since NFL Scouting Combine last week in Indianapolis, a source said
The two sides said at the time that they planned to talk again before the March 5 deadline to apply the franchise tag.
At this point, it seems the Cowboys have no choice but to tag Spencer and guarantee him $8.8 million season.
He will likely have penty of suitors on the free agent market and the Cowboys have no in-house candidates to replace him in the lineup.
Spencer is very good against the run. The Cowboys believe they can boost his sack totals if they actually turn him loose to rush the passer more.
He was used in coverage quite a bit last season.

The fact that we've yet to make a decision is ridiculous. And to not even talk to his agent is foolish.

My only guess would be that the team is waiting to see what happens to someone else (Wimbley?) before making a decision.

They did talk to his agent at the combine, this says they havent talked since. Maybe whatever they (his agent) laid out for a long term deal might have been too much.

They'll probably apply the tag for now would be my guess, unless they were 100% convinced something else was going to work out.

This notion that we have no options to replace the incredible talent of anonthy spencer and this fun line that everyone keeps repeating that he was dropped all the time makes me want him even less.

Spend the money elsewhere figure out the other linebacker spot as best you can with a short term vet.

Only 2 more days. Hopefully the tag isn't applied. I assume we'll find out tonight if he is.

I guess Watkins is thinking it's going to happen.

I pray Dallas makes it passed the deadline without taggin him.

It shouldn't surprise anyone if he's tagged. The level of ****** at the decision making level of this franchise should have every fan numb to this kind of shit after all these years.

Tie up that much cap for a player that couldn't do much of anything in a contract year?

Jerry- "yesh."

The Cowboys have franchised two players since Jerry Jones has been the owner (Ken Hamlin and Flozell Adams), but the team worked out deals with both players prior to the season.

Why? So he's almost guaranteed to hit the open market and a have a bidding war for him surface?

The deadline to apply the tag is 8 days before free agency starts. By tagging him, they are insuring he doesnt hit the market while still keeping the ability to negotiate a long term deal with him before free agency starts.

Source: Anthony Spencer likely to get franchise tag

March, 3, 2012
By Calvin Watkins

The Dallas Cowboys are still in talks with outside linebacker Anthony Spencer about a new contract, but it appears the team will elect to place the franchise tag on the outside linebacker, according to a source.

The deadline to franchise players is Monday at 4 p.m. CT.

Spencer would be guaranteed a base salary of $8.8 million for the 2012 season. The Cowboys have franchised two players since Jerry Jones has been the owner (Ken Hamlin and Flozell Adams), but the team worked out deals with both players prior to the season.

Well I guess we will be giving him a long term deal...

And since Newman is leaving this guy will now be the number one fan whipping boy without question.

I still say its crazy to give a long term deal to a guy who has been part of the problem over the last two terrible years on defense and who has been basically just marginally better than what Scott fujita gave us at solb in 05...

But, hey...jerry traded up for him so he is going to hold onto him forever.

I would cut ties with him and play that spot on the cheap with a veteran rotation and see what happens next year in the draft, free agency and maybe a switch to the 43.

Nope

Fujita had a pretty good year in 05. He came in late and learned the defense in a week and got on the field, plus he shared time with al singleton.

His numbers were good for a role playing fill in stop gap vet. I would prefer we go that route again and wait till a sure fire edge player comes along to play opposite ware. A strong vet might even help the locker room.

But spencers numbers are not that much better than fujitas in 05, clearly spencer has better sack numbers....but his sacks come in spurts, he will get like 5 in a month like in dec of 09 then the rest of the year have two more or whatever.

And when you are in a critical stretch in December and e is getting blocked by one guy repeatedly I don't see any need to make him rich. Let someone else do that.

Fugita was nowhere near the player Spencer is Theebs

We can all hate on the guy, but he isnt a lousy player. He's just not an elite pass rusher. Fugita was a JAG, Spencer is a decent quality starter.

And what is that player, dbair? Spencer is a rugged SOLB who offers minimal pass-rushing potential. So was Fajita, and I think that's the only point theebs is making.

Anthony fucking Spencer.

Dont wanna lose that guy, plus we wasted a first round pick on him and stuff. Fucking stupid shitbag for a GM. You could easily replace the guy. How many 4-6 sack guys is this league littered with? And we can't find a guy that does the few things Spencer does, that can do them well enough?

Spencer isn't worth the cap dollars. There's no way you can justify keeping him at that cap charge.

I'm not surprised. We couldn't even risk Gerald Sensabaugh testing the open market.

But, teh Spencer is good at the run game and stuff we needz himz!

He's not worth the tag that's for sure. I'd draft his replacement and let him walk.

I am not saying fujita is as good, I am saying he gave us good enough play and had good numbers for what he was paid.

I would prefer to go that route for this season before I would give spencer a contract that says he is a big bad ass when he is clearly nothing more than just a good player.

Play that position by committee this season and spend the money on better players.
