It's the dates you're missing. He does not become a free agent automatically after the season is over.

Shopping him can start now, it doesn't have to wait.

If you don't sign him you're in a hard boat too, franchise tag may have to apply. We somehow didn't get a deal done and no one knows why.

Therefore take this opportunity to test the marketplace. Discreetly, of course.

You asked why he couldn't be traded in the offseason. I answered that. Now you're mixing arguments

I'm pretty sure you can't trade him after the season unless you secure his rights via franchise tag

More hyperbole the 20 players that can put up Dez numbers?
If they were in a pass first offense like Dallas? No problem.

You worshipers are all the same. Not objective at all, just fanboys.

Pretty sure you're wrong. He is under contract until July 22 2015.

Dez for two draft picks we would most likely blow? Yeah pass.
Right because you can't trust the same guys who drafted Dez.... The guys who traded up to get him. Seems like that worked out just fine.

Them messing up 2 1sts and 2 2nds in next year's draft is about the same odds I see if they sign Dez to a new big deal and he suddenly finds himself having mean old hammy problems, and/or other soft tissue "injuries" you can't x-ray and never seem to go away. Think: Miles Austin.

I'm not against them re-signing Dez - IF they do their due diligence first. He is NOT worth Megatron money, in fact not even close.

No. NFL free agency will start in March 2015

NFL player contracts expire on the last day of the league year (per the CBA)

Think about what you are saying. When has there ever been a free agent to be that didn't sign (or got traded) because their contract didn't expire until July

Ok, I stand corrected on the dates.

So, by not signing him this last offseason (still don't know what happened there after all the sunshine and rainbow reports he was going to have a deal) they are painted into a corner essentially.... Giving them all the more incentive to try shopping him around.

What happened to the contract talks?

The only reason we're talking about Dez's contract is, they didn't get a deal done.

They still have options. They can negotiate with him after the season until he becomes a free agent. They could franchise him to buy time for a long term deal. They could let him test the market even and set his own value if they are far apart

From a cap perspective, waiting might be better anyway

They can shop him around too. Options all of which I call, due diligence.

If a team wanted to do a trade this season, before the October deadline, and wanted to gimme a 1st and a 2nd for him.... I'd lean toward it.

Another 12 million deal exactly like his rookie one would suit me. Heck I might even go as high as 14.
