Once a decade or so a mediocre team catches lightning in a bottle and makes a real run at something.

I don't support anything that leads to a more mediocre product on the field. For the most part these extra teams will be ..500 teams that had no business making the playoffs otherwise, and the vast majority of the time will lose in one sided fashion.

This is like the NCAA with all these bowl games. You can be a sub .500 school and yet still be invited to a bowl game. Do we really want that for the NFL?

Bowl games aren't playoff games. Saganaw Valley State can't compete with anyone from the ACC, but as we've seen, a terrible Minnesota team can beat a decent Philly team, etc. any given Sunday.

But I guess we'll just see the same whining about this that we do anytime the NFL does anything to improve the entertainment they provide by old people who fear change.

Owner who hasn't sniffed playoffs in four years advocates expanded playoff field. Not self-serving in the slightest.

I don't think more teams = more excitement.

Bad football is bad football.

I'll get amped for watching a 11-5 team vs a 10-6 team. You start flooding the field with 8-8's and 9-7's and its all zzzzzzzz....

.

well college doesn't have a playoff system now, but bowl games are the "reward" for the teams with the "best" seasons. Like Laz mentions above though tons of .500 teams get to bowl games. Nobody goes to most of the bowl games because there are too many of them with uncompelling matchups.

12 out of 32 teams in the NFL make the playoffs now. You make the playoffs by having a "good" season. You shouldn't make the playoffs for simply being 1 out of every 2 teams in the league.

I honestly don't think he sees it that way, or cares. I think its all about the money to him.

Remember the year noone wanted a team from the West because Seattle was so garbage, then they went to NO and put on one of the most memorable playoff performances in recent memory?

Sorry, I'm not seeing a downside. The league isn't better when fewer teams matter late in the season.

Remember since 1978, only 3 single digit win teams made the super bowl?

There's a reason for that.

The fact that they couldn't sell out two playoff games (I realize weather is a factor) should be an indicator of the "excitement" from adding 4 more average teams would be.

I just really don't see the downside. The Cardinals should be a playoff team this season. Back when the AFC was stacked there were teams that were left out that could have done well. To use other leagues as an example, this season there will be teams left out of the NHL's and NBA's western conferences who should be there, and those leagues already have 8 teams. The fact that an 8 seed rarely upsets a 1 doesn't stop anyone from watching those series, and it's incredibly exciting and memorable when it happens.

More teams have more to play for late in the season. There are more games to watch. Everyone makes more money. Where's the mythical downside?

Because the NFL is already watered down enough with 32 teams. If they want to make changes then they need to eliminate at least 2 teams instead of adding 4 teams. Jacksonville and Cleveland do nothing but drain the talent pool every single year. They need to be kicked out of the league. They've sucked ass long enough.

How does adding more playoff teams water the talent down? It's not like they're expanding the roster size or adding more teams. That makes no sense.

OK I misread it. I usually skim over what Jerry says.

The playoffs are fine the way they are. He wants to change things because 1) He's the worst GM in the league and his teams can't get into the playoffs under the current system and 2) Money

It also cheapens making the playoffs.
