I'm not arguing to replace him, I am arguing to not give him a contract that he is not worth. If we get him for face value I'll keep him around but if he is looking for elite LT pay then he can hit the road.

No contract has been offered so why are you arguing about it? You've already decided that he was going to be overpaid.

SHOW US. Or are you copping out? You spout alot of shit. Back it up.

Go watch the games, if you cannot see the chips for yourself then you aren't paying attention. I don't need to prove what we all know - Free got chipping help. You want me to prove to you that the sky is blue.

This thread is about having two big tackle contracts and my reasoning for no is that giving Free a big contract right now will be overpaying him. It is based on a hypothetical situation.

Well what can you do? If we don't pay him, and that doesn't mean a crazy salary, we are going to have to pay somebody. I think it'd be foolish to let him walk after we invested so much time in developing him. once again. what kind of premium do you put on Romo's protection? This team will only go as far as Romo.

Every LT gets chipping help on occasions. I am not debating that. But you claim like it was a constant and now you bitching out when being challenged. Provide us footage of entire games. I don't have the games available to me.

This goes along with the theme of the original post.

That brings us to the Cowboys' current left tackle, Doug Free, who will be a free agent whenever the new league year begins. He could be restricted, but more likely would be unrestricted as a four-year vet. What's his asking price? Certainly as much as a first-rounder, and quite possibly in the $40 million range. That's just the going rate for a proven left tackle, even if he winds up playing the right side again.

I am assuming $40m is over 5 years and that is overpaying right now IMO. I hope he remains a restricted FA and signs his tinder that is worth less than $5m because I would love to see him start one more year at that price before we commit more money. I am answering the question that was posted and my answer is Free is not currently worth $40m.

In a season where the Cowboys were beaten-up by the media (and rightfully so) just about every one on the team took a verbal thrashing along the way... A few select generated some positive love by the media and bloggers despite the horrendous season... Doug Free was one of those. I think we're going to find out what a good tackle is worth.

And yes, if the Cowboys had resigned Free before the '10 season started, we would have heard all sorts of howls from group of "realistic" fans for signing him before he proved himself.

Now we'll get the chance to hear the howls because the Cowboys are going to have to pay him as he played in 2010, which was good.

Why would anyone howl over a backup getting a minimum contract? That is an assumption that holds no weight.

because at this point we still don't know a lot about Free. We have seen him play one season with a crap line, backup QB and constant chipping help. The Cowboys would've been smart to sign him to an extension before he got too good instead of letting this play out where he will expect to get paid more than he is currently worth.

Yet, you know enough to decide that he isn't worth a big contract?

Would it be better to get into a bidding war for his services? I don't think so as that will up his price tag even further.

A rookie contract is not big. It's not pitching pennies, but it's also not astronomical and won't handicap us.

The argument that the offense had someone chipping a DE to Free's side is retarded. That's how the game is played, you scheme to take out the other team's best pass-rusher. Which includes chips and double, sometimes triple team blocks. It's not an indictment on the OT unless it's every snap. No OT ever not receives some kind of help. Esp LTs.

In Bob Sturm's blog of January 18th, 2011, he posted the following in evaluating Doug Free's season...

"2010: Free allowed 5 sacks in his first season at Left Tackle - a year that had him facing most of the elite pass rushers in football. He was given a lot of help early in the season, but as the calendar turned to October, it appeared that the Cowboys gave him less and less help (partly because they realized if one of their tackles needed help, it was Colombo). To be able to leave your LT to play on his own much of the time without any obvious moments of this season where he was to blame for a horrendous moment is quite remarkable. The Cowboys must be tickled. Only 6 full time Left Tackles in all of the NFL gave up less than 5 sacks. Meanwhile, according to the game graders at Profootballfocus.com, Free is the best run blocking Tackle in the entire league. I knew he was good, but I did not realize that a case could be made that he is already the best in his first year on the job. Overall, they rank him as the 3rd best LT in the league, behind Andre Whitworth and Jake Long . Nobody on the roster played more than Free (tied with Andre Gurode) with 1105 snaps. He did lead the team in penalties, with 11, so there is a thing or two to clean up, but overall, the Cowboys have to be delighted with his first year at Left Tackle."

And please if you want rebut this, bring some facts, not some "I watched him with my own eyes and this is what I saw."
