Grab a QB now and develop him during the remaining few seasons we have Romo and the window doesn't close. If the window doesn't close, you don't have immediate needs in the draft.

Don't come to this board and infect it with the typical ESPN stupidity.

I think in 2 years, with a mixture of crappy OL play which will cause a lot of wear and tear on him as it did this season, along with his physical tools starting to decline. A lot of what makes Romo good is his escapability, and that will be one of the first to go. If Romo was more like a Drew Bledsoe in terms of mobility, he would be average at best and that's how he'll look when he starts to slow down.

Might as well groom his replacement for a few years like Aaron Rodgers was so when Romo does start to decline, we don't skip a beat. Unless you'd rather wait too long like we did with Aikman and then end up with a flurry of Quincy Carter's, Chad Hutchinson's, Clint Stoerner's and whatever else crap we found.

Won't his repalcement when ready will be subkected to the same crappy OL? Duh... didn't think of that did you?

I think you're way off on this. But whatever.

Aaron Rodgers was an expected top 5 pick (predicted #1 overall leading into the draft) that fell to what, 24?

And I'd argue there isn't a QB in this class (maybe Gabbert... maybe) that grades out like AR did.

If there isn't a clear cut top of the board QB sitting there when we go on the clock, then it'd be foolish to take one. What I mean is, if we go on the clock and we have a corner, OLB, DE, DT & QB sitting there, all with 93-95 grades, then we'd be best served go after the corner, DE, or DT.

But if we have a QB with a 98 grade, and everyone else is at 92 or below, then take the QB. But there isn't that QB in this draft.

You want to develop a QB, fine... take one in a later round and develop him. Not at 9.

Rodgers wasn't a consensus #1. San Fran had the pick and they debated between him and Smith before finally choosing. But it's not like every team after them was excited that they passed. If they were, teams would have been falling all over themselves to get up for him. Instead, he had a free fall of Brady Quinn proportions. Credit the Packers for having a HOF QB with years left in him, but knew they could grab him, develop him and let him learn from a master of his craft and they would continue to contend for championships even after they dumped Favre.

People keep claiming to take someone who fills an immediate need, but I don't see the Packers doing that. Why? Cause they have been a Super Bowl threat for 15 straight years and will continue to be cause they played the QB position smart. Now they just add the best pieces they can and make it fit.

Of course I thought of that. I'm not saying don't draft OL, we need to draft them. A lot of them. But when you have a horrible OL coach and a team that can't draft/develop them, you have trouble.

My hope is Jerry gets to spend a lot of money on FA OL like Mankins, Gallery or whomever to replace the crap we have now so to avoid making the same mistakes on draft day.

Well, I've stated my case. We'll agree to disagree.

There isn't a GM in the league who would take a QB in our position, assuming there were equally rated players at positions of greater need available.

Well to be fair, I never said reach for a QB. I just said I wouldn't not take one either. Like I said earlier, Carimi is a guy I like at 9. But if the true premeire talent in this draft (including Carimi) is gone and we're stuck between Newton, Gabbert, Prince Amukamara, the rest of the OL which none is projected in the top 15 and some of the 2nd tier DL I'm grabbing one of the QB's.

Rodgers WAS the consensus #1 pick. He was not the UNANIMOUS #1 pick. He was before Quinn, so it was a free fall of Rodgers proportion. Favre had about 17 years in the league when the Packers took Rodgers. Hiow could they have been a threat for the Super Bowl for 15 years straight wqhen 5 of those 15 years they failed to make the playoffs? Favre had 17 years in and so naturally it made since to0 go after a QB. Romo has not been playing that long.

So then why bother to draft a QB still? On Gallery? Are you serious? And speaking of mistakes, didn't we spend big money on Leonard Davis, and wouldn't we possibly be doing the same thing with Mankins? Sheesh!

Drafting the BPA isn't a luxury. It's a necessity.

You aren't in the position to draft the BPA because you haven't been drafting the BPA over recent years. You're constantly chasing needs. You don't fix that going down the same road. You start taking the best players regardless of position. That's what the successful teams do.

When healthy, Favre was still playing at a Pro Bowl level when Rodgers was drafted. So by the logic used by most here, they shouldn't have taken a QB.

It might take me a while to decipher this, so I'll get back to you.

Obviously need plays a factor when you have similar rated players on the board. Which is probably the norm whenever you're on the clock.

But when there is only one clear cut best player there, you ignore the position and the current state of the roster and take that player.

The draft is all about upgrading your talent base. It's not free agency. It's not an exercise for the short term.

Are you comparing the play of pre-contract Leonard Davis to the play of Logan Mankins? Do you even watch football outside of the Dallas Cowboys?

Farve was 36 when they drafted Rodgers, and was waffling every offseason about whether he wanted to retire or not.

On top of that, Rodgers was considered a potential top 5 selection that free fell all the way to the mid-twenties.

That situation doesn't really compare to a team with a 31 year old QB drafting at the 9 spot, in a draft loaded with "meh" Quarterbacks overrated by virtue of the position they play.

Agreed. But that won't be the case at the 9 spot, with regards to a QB being the clear cut BPA.

And by the way, whatever you think of the current QB class is meaningless. We're talking about a philosophy. Should the Cowboys bypass a franchise QB at 9 and reach for a need?

No. Not just no, but hell no. I would take that QB if Romo was 26 and the MVP of the league.

I know the cop out - trade out. Sure.....if there's an offer that presents more value than that franchise QB. If not, I'm taking him.

I'm having a hard time finding 9 players better than the QB's.

AJ Green, Nick Fairley, Da'Quan Bowers, Patrick Peterson, and Gabe Carimi are all players I would take over every QB in this draft.

After that are a couple of players like Dareus who I don't like for the scheme cause he doesn't play the run, Prince is overrated, Quinn and Ayers are too small, I'd be up for Von Miller if the overrated Spencer was traded but that won't happen, none of the other OL are worthy of a top 15 pick, we won't go WR again in the 1st so no to Julio and then a host of other players who at best have a similar grade.

So it comes down to if Gabbert, Newton, Camron Heyward and maybe an Andrian Clayborn all have the same grade. Who do you choose?

Depends on what you think of Gabbert.

Some guys think he's the real deal and a top 5 pick. Scouts Inc. has him 6th overall on their board right now.

Others think he's now getting overrated for the lack of top flight QB in this class with Luck staying in school.

I agree with the latter. But I've never been very good as evaluating college QBs. So I say that with no confidence whatsoever that I'm right.
