I would think that even the homers and Jerry Bashers would agree that as a team we have done a pretty crappy job evaluating offensive linemen. For those who want to say we hit on Doug Free, I'll remind you that we had him rated below James Marten who we took a whole round ahead of Free.

You aren't drafting for need. If we take a CB that can be a first year starter does it mean we need him? If we take an OL that won't start his first year does that mean we don't need him? Last year we took Dez and he made an instant impact yet we didn't need a WR. Instant impact is a measure of current talent versus talent gained, not a measure of picking a player to fill your weakest role.

We've got the 9th pick overall and several obvious holes. Its not unrealistic for any organization in the salary cap era to think that their first pick (especially one this high) should not have some sort of immediate impact.

When teams talk about taking the best player available now, its the best player available in an area of need for most of the early picks. You think teams like the Colts or Patriots are picking a QB in the first round right now if a QB is the highest rated player on their draft board? Are the Vikings spending a top-10 pick on a RB this yr if that particular player is the "best player available"

And with Sean Lee taken in the second round last season, with both Brooking and Bradie James expected to return, it could be crowded here. But the fact his brother is playing so well in Green Bay and his football genes, Matthews figures to be a good player as well.
