My guess is that they were so totally caught up in committing their crime (the thrill and excitement of it) that they were totally short-sighted ... just not thinking about what happens next.

Jesus Christ, this country was nothing but good to these kids. One even got a prestigious scholarship. What the fuck was their motivation? Pissed off about Iraq/Afghanistan? We've pretty much kept our nose out of that whole Chechnya conflict.
