Former Cowboys TE Martellus Bennett says he 'always hated' Jason Witten, throws shade at team
By SportsDayDFW.com

Former Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett is a pronounced free spirit, though most people around Dallas may remember Bennett as that underachiever who lacked maturity -- an accusation at which Bennett scoffed.

He certainly didn't hold back when reflecting on his professional football past in an ESPN feature written by Mina Kimes. The story, which follows the perplexing Bennett brothers -- Martellus, now with the Patriots, and Michael, a defensive end for the Seawhawks; both played at Texas A&M -- includes several interesting tidbits that may be of interest to Cowboys fans.

Here are some of the highlights:

Martellus Bennett on Cowboys tight end Jason Witten:
"I hated Jason Witten. I appreciated his game, but I always hated him."

Martellus Bennett on the time he visited Jerry Jones' mansion for tea:
"Once you get rich, you start collecting weird s--- like silverware."

Martellus Bennett on joining the Patriots:
"I've been in the league for nine years now, and I've only been on two teams where the guys were a team: the New York Giants and now with the Patriots."

Martellus Bennett on Giants quarterback Eli Manning:
-- "Eli? He's cool. He's like a normal white guy you see at the park trying to teach his kids how to play soccer and you know he can't really play soccer himself."

The Bennett brothers on Texans defensive end J.J. Watt:
Michael: "Dominant player." ... Martellus: "Corny. Half of the NFL is corny, though." ... Michael: "People love J.J. Watt, but they don't really like J.J. Watt, know what I'm saying?"

The Bennett brothers on Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford (both smirk when asked for their takes on him, Kimes notes):
Michael: "The greatest quarterback in the NFL." ... Martellus: "Vicious. Competitive." ... Michael: "A real Joe Montana."

"I hated Jason Witten, he wanted me to practice hard, show up for meetings on time and give 100% during games"

I always hated Martellus Bennett; the guy is super immature, but not in a funny way.

WTF doe that even mean?
9 years? Guy hasn't really made a mark in the NFL. His opinion must hold a ton of weight...

Two words: Hard Knocks.

When HBO was in Dallas and Bennett was featured, you could tell he had zero respect for the Garrett brothers, didn't want to hear anything they had to say, and was basically just letting all their shit roll in one ear and out the other. He was just biding his time because he didn't respect the coaching. It was obvious, watching it. The Garrett's kept saying they were "waiting for the light to come on" but it was always on, just not for them.

I knew he could be a serviceable - if not outright good - tight end in this league. Just, not in Dallas. These dumbfucks should have woke up a lot sooner than they did and traded Martellus a lot sooner than they did. The kid just didn't dig the scene.

I knock Bennett for not having the maturity and dedication to truly apply himself, yes. But I gotta give him somewhat of a Mulligan considering the limp-dicked, slack-jawed, mealy-mouthed, wombat-faced twit coaching he didn't respect.

He's on his 4th team in what, 8 seasons now?
That's egregious in this era of free agency and guaranteed money? Read what he said, about the two teams he does respect. Both have something Dallas doesn't. (Besides Super Bowl rings that are newer than 21 years.)

I didn't read anything he said because he's a pea brain. What did he say exactly?

I dont believe they ever did trade him, wasn't he released or just not resigned?

IIRC, jeri was crowing about getting some huge offer for a player but he turned it down, seems like the rumor was that it was Bennett

jeri strikes me as the type that the minute someone is interested in a player, he holds on tighter figuring they must know something he doesn't. They never get squat for any players and let them rot on the bench before eeking out even the smallest amount of return. Its absurd, like keeping Hardy on the roster past week 10 last year when they could have saved several million in cap space but hell nah, those dipshits still thought they were gonna get on a playoff run

They matched the Giants offer sheet, but Bennett decided to leave. Can't say as I blame him on that count. But yeah, we didn't get shit for him.

There were teams interested in trading for Marty B the year before he left. Jones decided it was better to get nothing for him instead.

Bennett went onto becoming a Pro Bowl Tight End.

John Garrett is out of the NFL.
