Safety Gerald Sensabaugh didn’t get the security of a long-term contract extension he was seeking the past two years from the Cowboys.

Instead he has had to toil on consecutive one-year deals.

Although frustrated with the process, Sensabaugh has stayed patient and continued to go to work.

Now in the midst of one of the best seasons of his career, Sensabaugh is on verge of getting rewarded with a five-year, $22.5 contract extension.

The deal has yet to be completed but, according to a source, it is close and should be finished today.

Sensabaugh wouldn’t go into details about the negotiations in the lockerroom on Friday but expressed optimism about getting a deal done giving him security for himself and his family.

Vice president Stephen Jones was cryptic and telling when asked about the team’s interest in getting an extension for Sensabaugh.

“You never know,” a smile Jones said. “It could be done.”

Sensabaugh is the Cowboys second leading tackler in 2011 with 63 stops. He also has two interceptions, four pass deflections and two forced fumbles.

I'm not sure how I feel about this.

He was horrid last year. He's been good this year.

I guess it'll depend on what happens with fat Rob.

Are we under some sort of roster signing gun that I'm not aware of? Why are we rushing to extend marginal players? Nobody in this secondary should be extended (too late on OScam)

Maybe Mike Jenkins.

I have always liked Sensi and i think he is a good dude. He is one of the few play makers on the team that has the ability to create turnovers. Good for him to finally get a long term contract after all the 1 year deals.

Sensabaugh, 28, played this season on a one-year, $2.5 million contract. He has started all 12 games, racking up a pair of interceptions and two forced fumbles to go with 60 tackles (50 solo). Sensabaugh is unlikely to last through the end of the deal, so it's probably a bit back loaded. Pro Football Focus has graded Sensabaugh as a top-ten safety in the league this season, performing effectively in both coverage and run support. Dec 9 - 3:39 PM

Just sayin

Go take a look at the contracts Weddle and Huff got in the offseason, those deals are rediculous. We got an ok player for a cheap price. Much better than getting an ok player at an expensive price.

I'm not sayin he's great. Hes Ok and more importantly, he's cheap.

Think about this - you were also complaining about Scandricks deal, he just happens to be our 2nd best corner..but think about this

If we lost Sensy, Elam, Scandrick, and Spencer this offseason, oh and Newman...how the hell do you think this team would fill all those holes in 1 offseason? They can't. Signed Scandy and Sensy cheap and TNew is definitely a goner. Let's see what happens with Spencer.. 2-3 holes on D are much easier to fill than 4-5..we haven't even talked about the holes on the oline yet..sheesh. That's a lot of work man
