By Dave Halprin

While satisfying, the victory over the Giants definitely came with some indigestion. Winning 36 - 31 over your division rival in the opening game of the season should never be dismissed or even taken lightly, but if you break it down, the Cowboys, to some extent, got lucky on Sunday night. There are two sides to every coin.

The Good

Let's not go into detail about a couple of the good points because we've already covered them. The turnovers created by the defense is one of those good points and the number one reason Dallas won the game, but I doubt we can count on a +5 turnover margin every week. The other good was Tony Romo, who gutted it out for a victory that was accomplished in an unconventional way.

Okay, now that we've dispensed with those two, let's move on to some of the other good.

1. The offensive line. For most of the game, Tony Romo had plenty of time to throw the ball. While he was hit quite a few times, some of those where the result of Romo holding the ball until the last possible moment. He was only sacked twice in the game. Thinking back on the game, at no time was it a case where the prevailing sentiment was "If only Romo had some time to throw". And don't look now, but the Cowboys actually had a semblance of a running game. It wasn't great but it was enough. Which leads us to point two...

2. The running game. It wasn't dynamic, it wasn't scary, but it was enough to keep the offense somewhat balanced. Enough to keep Romo from having to drop back to pass on every play and risk further injury. It was just enough to say we will run the ball. DeMarco Murray carried the ball 20 times for 86 yards, an average of 4.3 yards per carry. Not bad, and Murray ran with determination. Also, Bill Callahan refused to give up on the running game, he's trying to build on it. This wasn't a great rushing attack, but coming from where we were last year, it's at least a good start.

3. Defensive line. With all the injuries coming into the game, this unit could have been a disaster. But they weren't. They shut down the Giants run game (50 yards total), they were part of the turnover parade (INTs, forced fumbles, fumble recoveries) , they had three sacks and a bunch of pressures/hits on Eli Manning. Great job from a supposedly weak position group.

The Bad

1. Converting turnovers into points. Dallas's offense bogged down in the redzone and left a ton of points on the field and off the scoreboard. DeMarcus Ware intercepts the Giants on the first offensive play at the 15-yard line. Dallas settles for three. A Will Allen interception sets Dallas up at the 48-yard line, after driving to the Giants 13, the Cowboys turn it over. No points. This pattern was repeated a couple of other times. Thankfully the defense decided to start scoring touchdowns on their turnovers and saving the offense the trouble. The Cowboys offense has to be sharper in the redzone and get the full points off of turnover-created opportunities.

The Ugly

1. Pass defense. Throw away the interceptions and the pass defense was atrocious. The Giants absolutely abused the middle of the field on slants and crossing patterns. They also caught the Cowboys in a blown coverage for a 70-yard score. Victor Cruz (3 TDs), Hakeem Nicks and Rueben Randle all had 100+ yard games. Tight end Brett Myers had 66 yards and a touchdown. The pass defense got torched for 450 yards on just 27 completions (16.7 yards per catch). Many of these completions were uncontested. Will Allen had a couple of big mistakes and Morris Claiborne didn't look to be in game shape yet. Dallas will have to go back to the drawing board here.

Every INT Eli threw was a gift which required no defensive playmaking other than catching a ball that came right to you, and another turnover transpired thanks to a fluke bounce after a punt, so calm down.

BB - You are right that the INTs weren't special feats, but at the same time, I think most of us can remember instances when this team botched easy INTs and fumble recoveries.

Also, to me it looked like a swarming defense last night.

Kansas City will be a challenge, though.

I dunno. Rob Ryan didn't coach turnovers? I thought they all did. The closer you look, the less impressive last night looks. Even though Alex Smith doesn't have the ability to rape us through the air, I don't see us winning next Sunday in that noise factory. It'll be a carbon copy of our start last year.

I don't know if it is true, but a week or so ago I heard one of the Cowboys beat reports say that the current DB coach has the DBs working with the JUGS machine more than any previous Cowboys DB coach.

The Giants had a makeshift OL last night. I'm sure that made things easier for the Cowboys D. Plus the Giants' best RB basically benched himself.

Charles and Bowie are no slouches. Dexter McCluster can be dangerous. Smith is pretty good. And Romo hasn't looked especially sharp.

I do think the Chiefs game will be tough.

Aren't mostly INTs are gifts that don't require any defensive playmaking? And say what you want, Ware's INT was the result of defensive and athletic playmaking, because it was pretty much split second.

And as for that fluke bounce from the punt... I seem to recall when Cowboys Stadium first opened, and the Cowboys played the Giants in the inaugural game, that Romo threw a pass that bounced off of Witten's heel, and the Giants' defender scooped it up and ran it back.

So what the fuck is the big deal? Most of the times in the past it was the Giants' that capitalized off the Cowboys' miscues, bout time we turned the tables.

We won in that same noise factory a couple of years ago.

Cowboys had a makeshift DL, so that makes it all a wash.

Some are, some aren't. Carr made two picks last year that required quite a lot of savvy and anticipation. Last night, not so much.

He gets credit for catching the ball, which he's not used to doing, but he hardly had to exert himself.

But the one last night by Carr, required some concentration, because of it being a tipped pass.

Only bitches whine about this crap about how this turnover was a gift and whatnot. Who the fuck cares.

He gets credit for making a play that ultimately won us the game.

:lol

you're being very generous

You should care if half of the turnovers were the result of dumb luck instead of coaching. And weren't you bitching after the game that the win felt like a defeat?

The Chiefs beat the Jags, oh noes we are in trouble by letting Eli Manning has lessor stats in a loss than Romo and company had in a loss last fall against the Giants who let us hang around and stay in the game and almost win it if not for a Dez pinky. I question if anyone of you ever enjoys a win from this team.

Dumb luck how? Other than the punt that hit the Giants' player, who mind you, should have been called for holding anyway, because he pulled Harris' jersey. That's hardly half.

And weren't you bitching after the game that the win felt like a defeat?

I was bitching over the freaking playcalling of how the receivers would cut their routes a yard before the 1st down marker, and then failing to get the first down as a result; and I was bitching about the play clock being allowed to run down to near zero.

That's not the same as bitching because of the turnovers being "gifts" according to you. Would you rather they not got those turnovers?

I don't get it either. I'm sorry, if I think that our win over the Giants was more impressive than the Chiefs' win over the Jags.

I said the INTs and the wayward punt were gifts, not all of the turnovers. It's okay to admit we're not perfect.
