Real Christianity is unfortunately mistaken for American Christianity. For good reason since the American church has basically bastardized the teachings of Jesus. It's no surprise that everyone is confused because they are going off the example placed before them rather than the truth.

The thing that gets me time and again about this debate is that the discussion gravitates towards the hot-button issues rather than any theology. That is unfortunate...lots of people would be less confused if so-called believers actually practiced the teachings of Jesus. The water would be less muddy and then folks could reject everything based on real Christianity rather than the made up version if that's what they chose.

You are confusing the holy catholic church with Catholicism. Two completely different things.

Catholic is merely a definition of the church. Catholicism, or the current Catholic church, is the name of a sect.

Much like the Baptist church. Baptism is something that you do but a denomination was created that is called Baptist churches. That doesn't mean that Baptists invented baptism though, lol.

And it's not a matter of talking shit. It's just if you want to debate the validity of scripture do it on the merits of what it actually says rather than something that some idiot said. It seems that the debate is stuck in the mud because of what some guy said about the bible and then the argument goes that direction.

Understanding something has to be the starting point in any debate. It's like watching debate physics that doesn't understand physics. Instead they are debating it based on an article that they read about physics. Whats the point in that?
