Inside Addition

UNC LB Carter Taken In Second Round

Rob Phillips
DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer

IRVING, Texas - The Cowboys added to their linebacker depth Friday by taking North Carolina's Bruce Carter at No. 40 overall - the second consecutive year they've selected a linebacker in the second round (Sean Lee - 2010).

A Butkus Award finalist in 2010, Carter missed the final two games with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. He was medically excused from the NFL Scouting Combine in late February, and the injury probably prevented him from a first-round selection.

At 6-1, 240 pounds, Carter likely fits as an inside linebacker in the Cowboys' 3-4 scheme. A dynamic linebacker with good speed (4.5 40-yard dash) and range, Carter should add athleticism to a group that currently includes veteran starters Bradie James and Keith Brooking and a young backup, Lee. Brooking's future with the team has been the subject of speculation, in part because he will turn 36 in October. James is entering the final year of his contract.

The Cowboys selected USC offensive tackle Tyron Smith with the ninth overall pick on Thursday, breaking their 30-year streak without a first-round offensive lineman.

They have six picks remaining, including one in the third round (71st overall) later Friday. On Saturday, they have one in the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds and two in the seventh.

I don't know why but I love North Carolina's blue-on-blue uniforms.

I love this pick more than I love our 1st pick.

I love you, Bruce Carter.

I like the dark blue jersey with their baby blue helmets. Don't know why but it always catches my attention.

I don't think Carter is injury prone. He is coming off serious injury. Murray is injury prone though.

Right, it is not about being injury prone, it is about recovering from a serious injury. There is always risk involved with taking a guy who is injured. Will he come back at 100%? Will his longevity suffer? Will he shy from plays that put stress on his ACL?

This isn't Jamaal Anderson tearing his knee in 1998, bro.

I'm not acting like this is a career ending injury or even saying this was a bad pick. I simply do not like the idea that our two "ilbs of the future" are starting their careers with a major injury. If there was no concern about how he will come back then he would've stayed in the first round.

You make a good point. Who knows how careful he'll be on his knee. How long does it take him to trust his knee? Is he going to shy away from tackling in traffic from fear of someone rolling up his leg?

Nobody has those answers.

Why step outside your house when you run the risk of getting butt raped by a polar bear each time?

Where in the fuck do you live? Besides, everyone knows to carry a Coke when you're in polar bear country.

That is one of the stupidest arguments you have ever come up with. We are dealing with probability, not possibility.

If you're surrounded by polar bears the probability of you getting mauled in the anus is very fucking high.
