Garrett himself said it hasn't been physical enough.

He said that to the team on their first day in pads. Garrett WANTS the team to be physical. ThoughtExperiment is claiming the coaching staff is only trying to keep everyone healthy instead of being physical. Why is this stuff so hard for you guys to understand?

He also said inferred it after the second day as well. And, yeah, he WANTS the team to be more physical, but from his own mouth, they haven't been. So, to claim that the practices have been overly physical isn't being honest.

Why not? Because of the routes? To be able to be seen? Sure at 5'8" he is not tall, but 180 makes him fairly sturdy and a better stature ratio than Marvin Harrison.

Because it'd basically take away his side of the field, numbers out.

Most corners would have 3-4 inches height, plus longer arms. Hard for a QB to drop the ball in there when the corner is so much bigger.

Better off inside, in space, where that wouldn't be an issue.

Besides, it would take away his greatest strength - his quickness. Outside of slants, most outside routes are longer developing.

Better to keep him inside where he can make cuts and seperate 2-3 yards off the line.

Well you can't really do both. The two goals are at odds. Surely that's not hard to understand?

And I'm not even saying it's wrong, because it's true that you won't win the Superbowl with a lot of important people hurt. But I think there's a perception that we're running these super-tough camps, and we aren't.

@jonmachota: Cowboys DE Ben Gardner on Thursday's preseason opener: "I am expecting to play a lot, and I'm expecting to play well."

Gardner by all accounts has been pretty solid.

he can also flex between DE and DT, like a number of the other DL's we have

Call it pet cat or whatever, Gardner is a freak and hope he puts on a show in the Charger game. It's too bad he can't plump up to Hayden's size because that's where the least depth is. Pre-draft he was 262, but I know he put on weight. Did he get to 280?

This is from Pro Day for Gardner.
With solid performances at the Combine, Murphy and Mauro's efforts on Thursday were helpful but not necessarily critical to their grades. Three-year starting defensive end (and shocking Combine omission) Ben Gardner, however, took full advantage of his opportunity to work out for scouts, recording a 39.5" vertical and a 10-2" broad jump - numbers that would've ranked second and tied for fifth, respectively, among defensive linemen tested in Indianapolis.

The 6-foot-4, 262 pound Gardner also was clocked in at 6.78 seconds in the 3-cone drill and 4.83 seconds in the 40-yard dash. These explosive numbers provide quantitative evidence of the athleticism Gardner demonstrates on tape. Like Murphy, Gardner is viewed by some as a 'tweener but he's shown the grit to handle remaining on the defensive line as well as enough fluidity and instincts to operate as a linebacker.

Where did i say the practices were OVERLY physical? Your boyfriend Thoughexperiment claimed the practices were not about sharpening the team, just preservation. Guys get hurt because it’s physical. The O-line and D-line have been pretty healthy. Watch any of the battles in the trenches, it’s physical. There is sharpening going on. I know it’s suppose to be a finished product for you and your BFF, but it’s still early in training camp.

We're protecting DMac, Randle and Dunbar from injury. Let that sink in for a moment.....3 fucking scrubs.

I don’t think they are protecting any of them from injury. If they were healthy they would be practicing. Running backs get injured. It’s happening all around the league (if you follow the league). None of those 3 are scrubs. They all have proven to be able to play in the NFL. BTW, Randle hardly missed much time and was back at practice. I also think they are very interested in seeing what Gus Johnson can do.

I still think you are selling Randle short. He was fairly impressive when he got on the field last yr and by all accounts has looked even better in training camp this yr.

And we arnt protecting Dunbar and McFadden from injury, they ARE injured

Dmac is healthy. Team said he could practice. Jason came out and said they're being cautious with him. Pretty sure it's in this thread.

Edit: was in this thread:

Darren McFadden won't return to practice for at least another week

According to Garrett he is still rehabbing.

“It’s not precautionary,” Garrett said. “It’s just being very deliberate with his rehab...”

But hey let’s send a guy, that has missed 29 games with 15 different injuries, back early.

Dwayne Harris when asked about the different between Cowboy and Giant camps:

“I think there is more intensity there. This is more professional. Everyone is trying to keep each other safe.”

Garrett about being a physical team:

“The physical teams win,” Garrett said. “The best teams I have been on were physical. That doesn’t mean they weren’t skillful. That doesn’t mean they couldn’t throw the ball, defend the pass, but they’re physical. I think if you look at all sports, watch the NBA. The best players are physical. They’re sturdy. They’re strong. That goes really in any sport.

“That’s part of our game. We want to have physical football players on our team. We want to play a physical style football. We want to be a highly-skilled football team. But the base of what we want to accomplish is to be a physical team that dominates the line of scrimmage.”

Punishing the opposition is the goal, according to Garrett. It’s why he tries to imbue qualities of grit and resoluteness in his players during training camp.

“Teams that have won and been successful in our division are big, strong physical teams,” Garrett said. “You can say that and talk about it until your blue in the face. But unless you do something in practice to instill that in your team you’re not going to be that team, so that’s what we try to do.”
