Cowboys LT Tyron Smith on this year’s training camp: “I feel like it’s a big improvement from last year. Everything is cleaned up a lot.”

It feels different with Garrett being more of a walk around coach. It feels right. Garrett for the first time in his presser sounded like a real head coach.

Someone mentioned that the team felt like it was split in half between offense and defense with two different head coaches. That's not the case now. The team is more organized. I sense a lot of calm from everyone. It is so much more enjoyable to watch.

Ryan Cook not working today. Back is acting up again.

Guy is blowing a perfectly good chance to make the roster. But back injuries are killer on an OLineman. Especially an average at best one.

Sign/trade for a good guard, or gtfo.

Fixing the offensive line could be the difference between 7-9 and 10-6.

I think Rosario proves to be a decent role player. I could see him getting 15-25 receptions this year with good blocks along the way.

No chance. He'd be the 4th TE at best. If we even keep that many.

So being behind 3 TEs and 3-4 WRs, and a RB or two in the pecking order, you could still see him catching that many? If he even makes the team, I'd be shocked if he catches 5. If he makes the team, he'd be inactive most games, if not all. Barring injury, of course.

So, what happened last year? This is Tyron talking here, so it's not a Rob Ryan defense issue.

I'm trying to follow the sequence of events:

1. Jason was OC who was also in charge of the team.
2. Hid behind Romo's ability to organize chaos.
3. Was demoted to only a HC.
3.a. Brother was fired.
3.b. Coach known for offense that is polar opposite of Jason's was put in place.
3.c. Romo wanted to be a part of coaches meetings, play design, "attack each defense differently", and run more.
3.d. Tried to keep his play calling in place through Wade Wilson relaying plays.
4. OC is improvement to last year as per Jerry and Romo. Defense is well organized through Kiffin and Marinelli. Garrett is not needed.
5. The overall "improvement" that Tyron may be seeing is reducing Jasons effect on the team. Logic says that the farther the actual coaching and manipulation of the game is kept from Garrett, the better the team might be.

I'll bet you $5 he gets closer to 25 receptions at years end than he does only 5 receptions.

I think Jerry will call some team about a guard and he'll get talked into trading for a backup TE.

Yup. Also, given Parnell's problems getting healthy, the depth at OT is tenuous at best.

Garrett has been neutered. Anyone who isn't a blind homer sheep can see that.

Actually it seems like he has been empowered. Put your Hostile/Garrett bias thing away and look at it fairly. Garrett is talking and walking around with more authority. The team feels more organized because the strong suit of Garrett is organization. He can put more time into making the practices the way he wants. It makes sense unless you have some type of agenda.

Well Garrett can either let his pride get in the way or make the best out of it and i think in that process he realized it gave him a different outlook. I have painfully listened/watched to Garretts press conferences over the years. He sounded different to me this last time. I think he sounded like Bill Parcells. lol

I do agree with you that Garrett's best chance to succeed was by having his nuts clipped. He isn't a good OC. He might be a good HC with two former HCs on both offense and defense

W2W4: Cowboys training camp: Day 15

August, 11, 2013

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- The Cowboys begin their final week of training camp Sunday with a 7 p.m. CT practice, 5 p.m. PT.

The undated injury report: There's always something right? Well, wide receiver Cole Beasley hurt his left foot in the Oakland loss on Friday night and his status for this week is in question. There is some good news, rookie wide receiver Terrance Williams is expected to return after missing the game with a concussion. Cornerback Morris Claiborne could also return Sunday after missing the Raiders game with a sore knee. Linebacker Alex Albright (back) is also expected on the practices fields.

Brian Waters update: The Cowboys are interested in obtaining the veteran guard to improve the offensive line. The Cowboys were spurned in their attempts to sign Brandon Moore, who elected to retire instead of playing in 2013. Waters hasn't played since 2011 when he was with the New England Patriots. If Waters is signed he'll get a chance to compete for the starting right guard position with Mackenzy Bernadeau.

Who needs a good week: Let's start with safety J.J. Wilcox, who led the team with six tackles and one interception against the Raiders. We're not picking on Wilcox, because he's still learning how to play safety, but he needs better ball awareness. Same can be said of cornerback B.W. Webb who missed a few tackles and allowed a receiver to get behind him. Webb also muffed a punt. Gavin Escobar has to improve his blocking and route running. The rookie, a second-round pick, is behind James Hanna on the depth chart. Special teams had a rough night in Oakland. A muffed punt, a 51-yard kick return was allowed, a blocked field goal and some mental mistakes. George Selvie played well in the first preseason game against the third teamers. Faced with the starters and second-teamers in Oakland, he struggled.

Moving up: Joseph Randle, the rookie running back, is still behind DeMarco Murray, Lance Dunbar and Phillip Tanner, but you can tell he's got the skills. He displays good vision and isn't afraid of contact. Left guard Ronald Leary is making the Cowboys forget Nate Livings. Leary had a solid night in Oakland playing the first half. The more snaps he gets the better he's becoming. Defensive tackle Ben Bass had only one tackle but he was a force along the defensive line.

OXNARD, Calif. — The Cowboys made three minor roster moves Sunday. The club released one long snapper, Jackson Anderson, and replaced him with another, P.J. Mangieri. Dallas also added punter/kicker Brett Maher.

Both Mangieri and Maher played on special teams together at Nebraska. While Mangieri has no NFL experience, Maher was had a brief stint with the New York Jets that ended last month when he was cut.

Maher made 20 of 27 field goals as a senior with the Cornhuskers and converted all 59 point-after tries.
