Why do i have the feeling penalties and bad special teams will be this teams downfall...again.
I got a bad feeling from the entire game. Not because of our players -- they are fine for the most part, at least the starters. If we stay healthy, we should be a pretty good team. And we do have good assistant coaches.

I'm talking about the sideline/coaching makeup and chemistry. Garrett just stands there looking like he doesn't know what to do with himself now that he isn't calling plays. He wasn't involved with much of anything. He was almost never even talking into the headset. So he just rotated between fiddling with the headset switch on his belt, folding his arms, spitting, and doing his much-rehearsed huge selfie-pic grin. One time after the #3 QB threw the bad pick, he was seen talking to him like a QB coach, but that was about it. Contrast it with how Allen looked for the Raiders... Big difference. And I'm not talking about how much he yelled or his facial expressions, but how involved he was.

One time after Frampton had a bad series, Garrett tried to say something to him and even put his hand on him, and Frampton just kept on walking right through him to the bench.

Now I'm obviously a confirmed Garrett hater -- I think the guy stinks. But this time, this isn't even a criticism of him, it's of Jerry's Frankenstaff. This looked and felt like a bunch of coaches he picked and threw together with Garrett as the front man. If we get off to a good start and win some games, it'll probably be fine. But if we get some injuries or something goes wrong and things go south, I have a bad feeling that things could turn ugly.

I hate that Garrett is joking and smiling on the sidelines. Maybe it’s just me, but i want my coach serious and with a game face on. The way the 1st string offense, defense and special teams played looked eerily similar to the past seasons. They looked flustered and not ready to play. Raiders looked faster. Playcalling seemed ok, although why don’t they just throw a jump ball to Bryant? Nobody can cover him, i don’t get it. Starting O-line looks good. I liked the challenge by Garrett, i thought the ball crossed the goal line. I thought he should have called a timeout before the 2 minute warning. Mixed bag tonight, still early but some concerns.

Same. That's one thing I don't like about him. He has that huge practiced grin on his face way too often, even after bad losses. He's always "on". It's like he's more concerned with people liking and approving of him than anything else. Do you really have to give the 12-tooth smile to the ref after you disagree with him?

I mean, when Mickey did that pretty long interview with Romo tonight, Tony sounded more like the head coach than Garrett. Maybe that's okay because I think Tony should be more involved and this year he will be. But like I said, I get a weird feeling about the entire dynamic.

On a non-Garrett note... Escobar looks terrible. Who was that scrub who blew him up on a running play for about a four-yard loss?

How about that Beasley? More than 10 yards on one play, eh Genghis Khan?

I have a feeling we better really hope Will Allen can play okay.

I wish theebs was here so we could commiserate about how awful Jesse Holly is on the postgame show. Good God he sucks.

A few times Tony had a lot of time to throw. Haven't seen that in a while. Hopefully it's no fluke.

I know it's preseason, and no need for Romo to get himself hurt, but in a real game... I'm hoping that if Romo is in that situation where he has a ton of time and no one is open... that he takes the ball and just run with it. Wade Wilson needs to tell him when to take off. I think just throwing the ball away or taking the sack hurts more.

Random observations regarding the game:

1. Alex Barron is back in the league? Andre Gurode is still in the league? Michael Jenkins is playing hard?

2. Sean Lee's hit on the QB, causing the fumble, was impressive. I didn't know he could hit that hard.

3. The drive with Romo that ended the first quarter and began the second (leading to the blocked field goal) looked solid. The offense got into a nice rhythm. Obviously a touchdown would have been better, but I liked how the offense looked.

4. The Raider who blocked the field goal attempt split David Arkin and Dante Rosario.

5. Not too concerned about Pryor's running and overall success against the 2nd team defense. It isn't like the Cowboys are game planning at this point.

6. I am beginning to see what Garrett apparently sees in Dunbar.

7. Reassuring to have the starting OL playing together through the first half. I gotta believe that they'll be a big improvement over last year.

8. Armstrong and Randle looked o.k. as kick returners.

I didn't get a bad feeling about the game because I focused on how the players are playing (as you mentioned in paragraph 1).

As for Garrett's new role -- This is exactly what Jerry was trying to avoid when Jerry went on the "my head coach must be a coordinator" kick (with Wade and then Garrett). When your walk around head coach doesn't have near absolute power (like Jimmy and Parcells had) your walk around coach is sort of like a castrato.

The fiercely intense and emotive sort of coach (e.g., Ditka) could carry off this sort of situation.

Garrett manages / expresses his own emotions in a genuinely weird way (typically refusing to express disappointment or anger and instead offering peppy phrases). It is going to be strange watching Garrett doing an odd, pale impression of Ditka.

Well said. Reminds me of Michael Dukakis wearing an army helmet sitting in a tank. Helmet was tilted a little and there was no inspiration except to be embarrassed for him.

Not at all. Kelly will probably be eventually figured out, but I wouldn't want to have to defend his offense the first few weeks of the season. Facing him on opening day is probably a nightmare for a DC.

And that's not even mentioning that Griffin might not be ready to play yet.

Would anyone be shocked if the Eagles beat the Redskins week one?

It wouldn't be a total shock, but I don't see them winning that game unless the Skins have a ton of turnovers.

The Eagles are going to be terrible this yr.

We'll split with them. Book it.

Eh. Highly doubtful unless we just have a shit ton of injuries or Romo throws 5 picks.

I see the Eagles being fortunate to win 3 or 4 games this yr.
