I like the pick. He looks like he'll be a stump in the interior. He's just what we needed.

* I like Frederick. Think he can start for us right away and for a long time.
* We all wanted interior OL.

Con's
* We got trade raped in the move down.
* We helped the best team in the NFC get better.
* We reached (some) for Frederick.
* Jason is clearly not running anything. Business as usual with the worst General Manager in professional sports.

Not that I'm a Garrett fan at all but all this drama about the coach running the draft. Jerry insists on running the personnel but is constantly looking for scapegoats and the media & fans keep falling for it. Call a spade a spade. He has ruined and continues to damage this once proud franchise.

so you've seen their draft board?

nope. but as a fan i think we need a C. he's a highly rated center.

that you could get much later. i think crypen (sp) would have been a better pick and rated higher than frederick.

then again, we needed OL and C, and S and any of these would have been for need.

i just think this was a reach but i hope he can be a mauler and a smart dude.

Frederick on with the Fan now... Says he didn't expect to be a first, thought he was more a second round kind of guy. :paper

on NFL.Com, he was the top rated C. barrett jones was a G per them.

no idea what went on behind closed doors. we'll just have to see how this plays out but i also hope we get a T in FA now.

Broaddus (who isn't exactly thrilled about the pick) is saying Frederick did rate higher on their board than Cyprien

and why not insist the 49ers throw in a 2014 3rd or 4th to make up the difference? They probably wouldn't have even blinked at that.

Of course I expect Jerry and Stephen to say the trade is fair. Do the homers really expect them to come out and admit they just got beat? Even if you don't want to believe the trade value chart look at other teams' trades. We keep getting beat and it's not bad luck or coincidence.

I think some people are going overboard a little in the negativity about the kid. It isn't like the guy was expected to be a Saturday pick. I had 4 write ups on him from various services that all had him as a 2nd rd pick. Kiper liked the pick too.

I think its totally fair to criticize the trade down, we didn't get enough in return. But everybody has spent years pissing and moaning about the OL and for the 2nd time in 3yrs now they use a top pick on an OL, and you are still complaining.

Supposedly Callahan really likes him and is being allowed to implement his blocking system. Shouldn't you then trust the guy to know what sort of guys he wants & likes for his scheme?

Seeing the interior of our OL caved in time after time (whether its a run or a pass) has happened way too much the past 2-3 years and this guy is a step in the right direction in preventing that. he isn't going to get bulldozed into Romo or our RB over and over again.

I'm not happy with the lack of value in the trade down and they may have got this Frederick kid a half round early, but plenty of other teams made similar type moves and its VERY clear that the NFL people liked the OL prospects in this draft better than most other positions now after this first round. Maybe Frederick was a little over drafted, but so was Justin Pugh and Kyle Long.

i guess i'm mad at the value, so i appreciate the response.

could we have gotten him w/our 2nd round pick? was anyone else looking at him? could we have gotten S and then C in the 2nd?

good points.

cmd - we look at the other trades and compare those. not a chart. so far i agree we should have gotten another late round pick.

It was obvious Garrett was PO'd from the time we traded down until we made the call to take Frederick. I wonder who it was he wanted to draft at 18.

The value in the trade down is the only thing that pissed me off. I was glad we moved down for the most part and while Frederick was drafted a little early, the massive run on OL's did kinda dictate that if we wanted any kind of upgrade at the worst position area on the team, we had to pick one where we did or pretty much strike out.

Jerry and Stephen both sound like blithering idiots defending what they got in the trade down.

good to know. it was a shocker and i reacted as such. now it's time to learn about the kid and hope he can be the answer at C cause we do need one. i did say NFL.com had him as a #1 center.

no one saw this coming so that's how we all react. but i'll wake up eventually tomorrow and learn more about the pick. if he did rate that high, then we went by our board.

"Susceptible to explosive interior linemen off the snap and needs to set up quicker to gain position and block off-balance"

so....he probably should stay away from any explosive interior lineman. I wonder if Jerry can make sure Dallas avoids teams with those types of DL.

we didn't get raped. but yes, we should have gained a higher 3rd or a 6th.

but glad you don't run to extremes. you know, like "we got raped on our trade...the trade isn't the problem".

Gotta hope we sign Clabo or Winston AND Brandon Moore now. Let Bernadeau and Livings battle it out for the left guard job. Competition is necessary in football, it brings out the best in players and we tend to anoint starters. Then look for a young, athletic tackle we can coach up on Saturday.

Line could look like:
LT Tyron Smith
LG Nate Livings
C Travis Frederick
RG Brandon Moore
RT Tyson Clabo

with Phil Costa, Mackenzy Bernadeau, Jermey Parnell, and Ryan Cook all providing versatility and depth.

I would've preferred Schwekne myself... I have a feeling a lot of Frederick's rating came from being a Wisconsin guy, where they have had good O-lines. That's not uncommon when grading interior O linemen where people don't always pay that close attention or know what they're looking at, you just default to the name school for that position.

I agree we needed a C because Costa sucks. Why couldn't we have made Bernardeau our C and drafted a Warford to take care of that?

I dunno, he may be a decent player. Just can't believe we took him where we did.

can't say that unless we know who else was looking at him.

we've been whining for a C and we took the best on the board at the low end of a weak "skill" position draft.
