The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not the same lifeless team the Cowboys beat, 31-15, last season to improve their record to 8-6. That was the Cowboys’ final victory in 2011.
Those Bucs were in the midst of a 10-game season-ending losing streak that cost coach Raheem Morris his job.
These Bucs appear to have been energized by rookie Greg Schiano, considered more of a taskmaster than Morris, who favored a looser style of leadership.
These Bucs opened their season with a 16-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers, holding quarterback Cam Newton in check. They then led the New York Giants by 11 points entering the fourth quarter Sunday before Eli Manning rained on their parade, pulling out a 41-34 victory.
Two draft choices and three free-agent signees have helped with the improvement.
Like the Cowboys, the Bucs moved around in the first round. The Bucs impacted the Cowboys’ draft when they traded the fifth pick for the seventh pick. Jacksonville took wide receiver Justin Blackmon.
The Cowboys then moved up to get the sixth pick and take cornerback Morris Claiborne. That left the Bucs to select the defensive back they preferred, safety Mark Barron, a heavy hitter who appears to be a perfect fit.
Later with the 31st pick of the first round, the Bucs added running back Doug Martin from Boise State. Martin has rushed for 161 yards, helping young quarterback Josh Freeman look more like he did two years ago than he did in 2011.
To complement their two top draft picks, the Bucs invested $141 million in three free agents — wide receiver Vincent Jackson from San Diego, cornerback Eric Wright from Detroit and guard Carl Nicks from New Orleans. All are starting and contributing. If Nicks sounds familiar, that’s because there was much speculation that he might sign with the Cowboys.
In the final seconds of Sunday’s loss to the Giants, Schiano ruffled Coughlin’s feathers when the Bucs defense played aggressively as Manning took a knee to end the game.
Schiano was unapologetic. His team is expected to play as aggressively against the Cowboys.
