I agree with No Shame on this. I'd bring a vet like Gregg on the cheap. That would give our line flexibility, as mentioned. Then we could move pieces around. And if ratliff goes down, I'm not trusting Brent to man the NT for the season.

Nobody asked you.

When Ferguson went down, Ratliff was trusted and did an outstanding job. No progress stopper was brought in.

I asked me.

I'll take the opportunity of veteran leadership on the line and flexibility over the progress of Josh Brent.

We got leadership on the Dline. ANd besides, how do you know he will bring leadership? Because he's old? This guy brings nothing but age and progression stopping. He's nothing spectacular. He's not a difference maker.

It'd make a hell of alot more sense to bring in someone like Robaire Smith, who played under Rob Ryan.

Lions | Bryant Johnson to be released
Tue, 26 Jul 2011 16:45:58 -0700

The Detroit Lions will release WR Bryant Johnson Thursday, July 28, to create room under the salary cap. He was set to make $3.2 million in base salary this season, which is too much for a player projected to be the team's fourth receiver.

Shawn Andrews out as Giants continue cutting offensive linemen
Posted by Michael David Smith on July 26, 2011, 8:16 PM EDT

The New York Giants keep cutting offensive linemen.

First it was guard Rich Seubert, then it was center Shaun O’Hara, and now the Giants are saying goodbye to tackle Shawn Andrews.

Andrews tweeted that he couldn’t come to an agreement with the Giants, then added that he’s had a blast in New York/New Jersey.

It’s been clear for months that Andrews wouldn’t stay with the Giants unless he was willing to take a significant cut from the $7.5 million he was supposed to make this season, but there was some thought that he could stay on a reduced salary. It’s still possible that he will, but first he’ll test the free agency waters.

Meanwhile, today’s moves represent a major shift on the Giants’ offensive line. Seubert, O’Hara and Andrews started a combined 29 games on the Giants’ line last year, and now they’re all gone. Rookie fourth-round draft pick James Brewer, a tackle from Indiana, may be pressed into duty early.

-------- ------------- --------- ---------

Holy shit they're really blowing up their offensive line.

Moore ready to move on, says Panthers won't re-sign him

Associated Press
Published: July 26, 2011 at 04:04 p.m. Updated: July 26, 2011 at 04:25 p.m.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A year ago, Matt Moore was preparing to enter training camp as the Carolina Panthers' starting quarterback.

Now he's looking for a job.

Moore arrived at Bank of America Stadium on Tuesday morning, but he exited less than 30 minutes later while fellow quarterbacks Cam Newton and Jimmy Clausen remained inside to go over the playbook with new quarterbacks coach Mike Shula. Even more telling for Moore's future: He left the stadium without a playbook in hand, while other players departed periodically carrying a three-inch binder.

Moore, an unrestricted free agent, seemed resigned that the Panthers have no intention of re-signing him come Friday. The Panthers previously said they're considering bringing in a more experienced quarterback to mentor Newton and Clausen.

"The main goal right now is to have a job and get in there and get your hands dirty and get to work," Moore said of his future.

When asked what jersey number rookie Cam Newton will wear because Clausen is already No. 2, Moore laughed and said, "He's probably going to wear No. 3."

That's the number Moore wore for the past four seasons with the Panthers, including last year when he entered training camp as the starter, only to be benched after two games. Moore later returned to a starting role, but he tore the labrum in his right shoulder against the New Orleans Saints in Week 9 and went on injured reserve.

Moore said he left the stadium Tuesday without talking to general manager Marty Hurney or any members of the coaching staff.

Moore said the purpose of his visit to the stadium was to get his shoulder checked out by the training staff. Moore added it's fully healed.

"Said hello and goodbye," Moore said.

Moore said he is a starting-caliber quarterback in the league.

"I think so given the right situation and the timing," Moore said. "A lot of things have to fall into place for that to happen, but yeah, I feel good. I feel like I can come in and compete."

Moore said he spent time this offseason working out with Newton, the team's No. 1 draft pick. Newton declined comment when he arrived at the stadium and as he left for a lunch break with running back Jonathan Stewart.

Clausen said he's eager to get going with the lockout over.

"We're grinding right now," Clausen said. "We have to get ready to go. Obviously we're a little behind because there is a new coaching staff and a new playbook. We just have to keep grinding each and every day."

Notes: Panthers defensive end Charles Johnson, considered the team's top free agent, said on Twitter he had a conversation with the team Tuesday and it "went great. Not good, but great!!" The team can't sign free agents until 6 p.m. ET Friday. ... The Panthers agreed to terms on a one-year contract with safety Kevin Payne, who previously was with St. Louis and Chicago.

Progress stopping? Is that the only mantra you can repeat to argue against signing a vet NT? Progress stopping is the stupidest reason to not pick someone up that I have ever heard. Who gives a shit about Brent's progress if his spot is taken by someone who is currently better than him? If Brent cannot progress himself while playing in as a backup then I question his ability to be a quality player. Did Miles Austin care about Roy and TO stopping his progress? No, he made the most of the chances he got and won the starting job.

if Brent cannot man up and take the job for himself he doesn't deserve to be a starter.

Don't worry about Big Gay. Oh I mean big guy. Or Cynthia. Whatever. I though I was on your ignore list? You don't like IGNORE.

We don't need him. Picking up a 30-something marginal player that the Ravens dumped is equally stupid. Brent is already a backup behind Ratliff. Nothing will be gained bringing in Gregg. He's be a PROGRESS STOPPER AND TAKING UP A ROSTER SPOT. Why else the Ravens cut him? Because they have Cody.

Just because he is a vet don't mean shit. Alot vets got cut yesterday. You and all the rest of you clamoring for Grgg, it's probably doubtful that you even watched him, and just know that he played for the Ravens.

Sounds like the Redskins will be releasing several veterans today. Wonder if they bring in Cullen Jenkins?
