Willis McGahee informed of his release
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 25, 2011, 5:41 PM EDT

We have our first post-lockout transaction to pass along.

Okay, it won’t officially be a transaction until Thursday. But we’re going to hear a lot of reports of agreements, deals, and other planned player moves all week long before anything is official.

The first such report is no surprise: ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Willis McGahee has been informed he will be released by the Ravens. We included McGahee on our list of players likely to get cut because he has a $6 million salary and seemed unwilling to take a pay cut.

McGahee will make less money wherever he signs, but he becomes a solid option for teams looking for a backup running back.

Ravens: Todd Heap to be cut, too

OWINGS MILLS -- In addition to informing running back Willis McGahee and nose guard Kelly Gregg that they'll be released, Baltimore Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome also told tight end Todd Heap that he's going to be cut.

Heap's pending release saves $4.6 million against this year's salary cap.

Heap is one of the Ravens' all-time best players at his position, but the Ravens drafted Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta last year.

Dickson seems to have the capability of becoming a full-time starter.

Heap was entering the final year of his contract.

Todd Heap, Kelly Gregg get the boot from Ravens
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 25, 2011, 7:07 PM EDT

We expected Willis McGahee to get released, but the Ravens pulled a few surprises Monday.

Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun reports the team has informed tight end Todd Heap and defensive tackle Kelly Gregg of their impending release. Gregg could be brought back at a lower price. It’s uncertain whether Heap may get the same chance.

Both players joined the Ravens in 2001, and have been among the most respected players in the franchise since the team moved from Cleveland. Heap was due $4.6 million, while Gregg was due $3.5 million.

The Ravens drafted Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta in the 2010 draft, and clearly felt they were prepared to move on from Heap. Dickson could be a big part of the team’s offense.

Yeah, these moves probably won’t quiet those Nnamdi Asomugha rumors in Baltimore.

UPDATE: Wow, they cut Derrick Mason too. That’s the most surprising one yet. Perhaps he could be brought back at a lower price, but it looks like the Ravens are dead set on getting younger and faster. (And possibly making some big splashes in free agency.)

Ravens get Nnamdi... Bet that.

Also, Kelly Gregg at NT and Derrick Mason could be great pickups for us if we need to cut Roy Williams.

See, Ozzy Newsome is smart. He's ahead of everyone else. Baltimore already in the swing of things.

The are going to be big players in free agency.

Yanda is the one I'm looking for, but I bet Baltimore isn't dumb enough to release him.

Yanda is a FA.. They'll have to resign him with only Boldin and Torrey Smith. Which I bet they do, unless they plan on going in for Holmes or Rice.

But Nnamdi is definitely their guy.

Kelly Gregg would be a nice pick up. He's a run stuffer.

Gregg would be a progress stopper...we have a probowl NT and a very promising young backup who should get more PT (Brent)

According to you we have future pro bowlers at every position. How we went 6-10 last year I have no idea . . .

I guess you havent read anything I've posted then and instead paid attention to the dipshit who no longer hangs out here.

Brent's gonna be a player. No reason to hold him back for a stop gap guy like Gregg

THANK YOU! Somebody seems to get it.

Sometimes you need to look beyond the name. The fact that the Ravens are cutting him because they feel he is a progress stopper, why would you want us to sign Gregg so that he can come here and be the exact same thing that the Ravens are cutting him for---a progress stopper? Especially when you said that Ozzie Newsome is so smart. Naturally, dbair, you know I am not speaking to you on this.
